Guidebooks will tell you average costs for the restaurants they list.

Tipping - depends on the country, but never at American levels. They are MANY tipping threads here, you might try these.

Even with the low euro I would about double the cost of restaurants at home -of course tip is usually included as a service charge and should say so -if so no need to tip and not expected (though never refused either).

2 persons for 2 weeks I'd say $300/day including transportation may be a low but realistic figure- for both not p.p. Could be a lot more and IME could be less -hotels will make a big difference. You may want to get a copy of Let's Go Europe (amazon.com) - best guide IMO for budget hotels and B&Bs -and don't forget airbnbs either.

I go for cheapest hotels because I am rarely in the room-just something that is neat and safe and near train stations as I travel by train and love to hop off and walk to a hotel.

To give another perspective, we have stayed in Sorrento twice and think it is a great base! It is easy to take the Circumvesuviana train to Herculaneum or Pompeii. A favorite memory is having a drink at the Foreigner's Club and watching the sun set over Mount Vesuvius. There are some nice restaurants, including ones right down on the water in the smaller harbor.

There is a bus from Sorrento that runs down the coast to Positano and Amalfi, you can take it back or one of the ferries. Personally I though a few hours in each of Positano and Amalfi is enough, you can see all the sights and wander the hillside.
