Help!! Need advice on driving the amalfi Coast

I'm planning to rent a car in Naples and tour the Amalfi Coast from Naples to Amalfi and back to Naples with a stop at Pompei to see the ruins. I plan to do this trip in a day and a half in July. I'd like to hear the good, bad and the ugly about this idea.

Thanks

For your reading pleasure.

Honestly, in July you would be much better off touring by boat and public trans.

Driving in the city of Naples can be nailbiting. Try and rent your car at an agency with very easy access to the highway leading toward Sorrento/Amalfi Coast. Do this trip on a weekday as traffic on the Amalfi Drive on summer weekends is terrible and VERY slow-going. If you are staying in Amalfi, arrange parking ahead of time with your hotel. Enjoy the beautiful drive!

Oops, sorry, obviously I don't know how to do that. I'll top the old discussion for you instead.

The problem in July is that the traffic will be horrific and your speed on the Amalfi drive will be about 10 mph.

I agree - at that time of year I would stay in Sorrento - spend 1/2 day in Pompeii (by train) and take boats to a couple of the towns along the coast on the other day.

And we've driven the Amalfi Coast a couple of times - and it was alot of fun - but in May - not July. Even then it was fairly crowded - and there were a couple times we were doing 5mph (since a whole line of cars had to pull over in turn so a huge truck could get by in the other direction).
