Thanks Bob. I ultimately chose the Hotel Kristal Palace knowing that it was further from the town. I liked the idea of being closer to a trail that you can walk along the lake and the fact that the Kristal Palace was very accommodating to vegetarians. Now trying to make some decisions about your suggestion of Hotel Grones or Hotel Digon suggested by Dianedancer or others in Ortesei.

Are you familiar with the type of walking, hiking that people do in Ortesei? Specific drives to explore during the day?

Sure--read about the Alpi du Suisi---accessible from both Ortisei and Castelrotto.

Find the super trip report by the Go_ family about hiking in the Dolomites.

The "Go Family" is actually Bob's family (he always so shy about mentioning the connection).

you might also find this link fun for planning your stay.

If you are vegetarian, try to get a taste of the unusually delicious olive oil that is cultivated on Lago di Garda.

So I ended up reserving Kristal Palace ( half board) for 4 days and 2 days at Hotel Digon ( half board) in Ortisei for 2 days.
