Dolomites or Lake Garda in early May

Hello again! We decided on the Dolomites or Lake Garda to base ourselves for 4 nights after a few nights in Venice in early May. And by "we" I mean me, DH and our 9 year old twin girls. We will have a car. We would prefer to be in the Dolomites, somewhere near Ortisei, but I am concerned about the timing of the trip and whether things will be open. We were in the BO a few years ago in mid April and were pleasantly surprised by the weather (we know we were lucky with that) and how bustling the towns were and how many lifts were open. I'm not sure if I can expect the same in the Dolomites? If not, would a base of Bolzano, Trento or Merano work better? Any other suggestions? We love beautiful architecture, history, hiking and/or nature walks and beautiful scenery. My girls love any kind of lift!

We are also considering spending the nights somewhere around Lake Garda instead and just doing a daytrip to the Dolomites. Thoughts?

Thanks!
Tracy

Kids and family would love Garda Land at the southern tip of Lake Garda:

Perhaps the Val de Gardena, and/or Ortisei Tourism offices could help answer your questions about the timing of your trip there. Westayed at the wonderdul Hotel Grones and You coildemail them as well.
