www.montreux.ch

has all the hotel listings (click on the english flag to get started), broken down by category/stars. they clearly mention which ones have lake views. Vevey is also included in the listings. Not knowing your price range I hesitate to even try to recommend.

The www.tgv-lyria.com site for the Zurich-Paris TGV sometimes has deals for about 35 euros if you book at the right time. From Basel, you can get tickets for 25 euros.

Hi jenblase,

If you do want to consider lakefront hotels in Montreux, I can offer a few --

Perhaps the best is the four-star Eden Palace au Lac (www.edenpalace.ch), right in the center of town. I've stayed here twice, and love its location.

Another place is the Ermitage at the edge of town, in Clarens (www.ermitage-montreux.com). It's well known as a restaurant and only has seven rooms. It's just lovely; I stayed there with my mother once.

A favorite on these boards is the Hotel Masson (www.hotelmasson.ch) in the suburb of Territet. I haven't stayed here, but you can find references here.

If you really feel like splurging, I can recommend the five-star Royal Plaza (www.royalplaza.ch). I stayed here once when I found a great deal. It's also almost in Clarens with great views over the lake.

Hope one of these works for you.

I looked at the Eden Palace and the rates are reasonable for that Friday night, for a lake view too. Thanks for the rec!

Swandav, can you tell me how far that particular hotel is from the train station? Would it be walking distance, with a couple of bags each, or should we just take a taxi?

Do you know of a good (detailed) map online of the Montreux area?

Hi again,

Natch! Here ya go:

http://www.montreux.ch/sightseeing/carte.html

See the point sticking into the lake at the bottom of the map? See the Casino there? The Eden Palace is just to the left of the Casino, just about at the "a" of "Quai Ernest . . .". The train station is uphill to the north & east.

It's very easy to walk. Just leave the station, turn left, and walk downhill. When you see the lake, you'll see the hotel. Or you can leave the station, cross the street and go down the stairs, and walk along the lakeside promenade to the hotel.

I'd probably take a taxi

Have fun!

ditto... easy walk from the train station DOWN hill to that hotel (as long as your luggage is on wheels, there's sidewalk the whole way), but you might want to take a taxi on the return UP hill!
