I have one free day while visiting London-
and want to go to Amsterdam for that day.
What would be the best way to get there.
Would leave early a.m. and return late night.
Looking for cheapest way!
Also best places to visit.. thanks for your help!!!

I think that you will spend too much money and time, and you will not see too much of Amsterdam. I suggest you to plan to visit Amsterdam for another time.
I do not know your plans, but if you have free time, you can go to Oxford, or Cambridge, or Bath, or Windsor castle, etc...

You have one free day and can't find anything to interest you in London or nearby?
A'dam is a great city - but not a very practical day trip. Sure the flight is short - but you have to get out to one of the London airports (either expensive train or cheap but lengthy tube or bus rides) and check in early for your flight. Then at the other end you have the same issues. then when you get back to London again there is the expensive or time consuming trip into town.
"Cheap" and "day trip" really don't compute . . .

If you're really serious, check the fares on flybmi.com: BMI flies from Heathrow to AMS. I don't know about the other airlines, so check whichbudget.com. There could be connections to Rotterdam -- so train from there.
If the flights on BMI are reasonable, you can buy a one-day travel card that can cover the round-trip tube ride to LHR. However, I've not been to London since they changed the fares completely, so I don't know the latest. Bus (National Express) to LHR may also be quite cheap.
