Help, 30th birthday present - where should we go?

Dear Fodorites,

I often frequent these forums and gain much valuable insight from all your posts. I recently went on a last minute break to Edinburgh with my partner, purely after reading all the useful info on here about how to create an efficient and exciting itinerary. So for that, thank you, it was most pleasurable and I'm sure it wouldn't have gone so well withoout all the help I had from here.

Secondly, it is my partner's 30th birthday on June 1st. I want to plan something really special - he is not interested in having a party or anything. I know he has mentioned that he would like to go to Italy and see the historic sights there. We like learning about different places' histories but we also like romantic and restful areas, so long as we do not have to go far for restaurant/pub socialising if we choose.

I am not very clued up on Italy so I guess the first thing I should do is buy a travel guide. I also know I will probably be told I have written this in the wrong thread or I should have searched the Italy posts, yikes, I apologise beforehand if so - I am just not very competent with the computer.

I have read a few posts that mention Lake Como - is this a particularly pleasant site? Forgive my ignorance. Preferably I am hoping to plan a trip either for a week or a long weekend @ first week in June.

Any ideas, info or helpful hints/ directions to useful posts would be greatly appreciated

Much obliged

Are we correcyt in assuming you'll be flying? if so, from where? if not, what form of tranport?

I can personally vouch for the mid-lake area (Varenna/Menaggio/Bellagio) at that time of year. Not yet crowded and great weather. This is NOT a place for frantic nightlife but rather being very chilled (emotions-wise).

Tell us more.

Lake Como is unbelievably romantic and restful. If you have a week, Venice and Lake Como would be lovely, with a stop in the Veneto to tour a Palladian House or two.

Hi Intrepid1, thanks for your reply - yes we will be flying from Manchester England and will be using public transport (trains/buses/walking) whilst there

I like the sound of mid-lake area, very nice. Thanks for your input

If you're looking for romance, you could do a whole lot worse than Lake Como in June. If you hadn't mentioned it already, I would have.

Good luck, and enjoy!
