Have you used the Vienna Card?
I am going to Vienna for 3 days and would like some feedback on the Vienna card. I have an interest in museums and other sites. Is it worth it to get the card? What if I just get the transportation card? Thanks for any information.

We are staying at the Hotel Romischer Kaiser which is in the center of the historic district. Will we even need the transportation card? We love to walk but with only 3 days time is a factor.

Yes you will need to use public transit. Places like Schoenbrunn Palace are out a ways; the U-bahns and trams make for quick travel within and around the ring. I still don't believe the Vienna Card is a worthwhile value...I see it is now 18.50 euro...use the money you save for a nice glass of wine.

On my 2006 trip to Vienna, the woman at the tourist office actively discouraged me from getting one, she said it simply wasn't good value. She too suggested a transit pass.
If there was a Vienna card similar to the Paris museum pass, I'd buy it in a heartbeat, but in its current setup, most people don't really save money.
As for mass transit, IF you only plan to see the sites in the central area, then you can get by without a transit card--I've walked from St. Stephan's to the Kunsthistorische and back with no problems--but I'd still recommend you get one anyway. Riding a tram around the ring is a fun introduction to the city...you decide whether you want one of the old style trams or the sleek new Porsche-designed ones.
I'm usually in Vienna for about two weeks, so I get weekly passes. Or a one week pass and then a strip card for 8 trips, depending on my plans and the weather.
