If you are looking for good discounts using the card I don't think it is worth it. Instead, buy the 72 hr transit pass which gives you unlimited use of Vienna's excellent public transportation (U-bahn, some S-bahn, buses and Trams). The 72 hr pass is the first thing I purchase when arriving in Wien.

You can also purchase the passes at any of the MANY Tabak stores found in the city. I think the 72 hr pass is about 12 euro, while Vienna card is 16.90 euro. You can also buy 24 hr passes or 8 day passes depending on your length of visit.

I was hoping that I could get a discount to Schoenbrunn Palace and to the Fine Arts Museum and the Belevedere.
Has anyone used the Vienna Card for these admissions and was it worth it?
The cost now is 16.90 EU or$21.25

Of the 16.90 EUR, 12 is for the 72-hour transit pass. So for the 4.90 you get a 1 EUR discount at the Fine Arts Museum, 2.50 at the Belvedere and 0.90 at Schoenbrunn. So you need at least one more museum to come out ahead.
Regarding the 12 EUR pass for transportation only, that is what I would get if I were staying 3 days only. But for a longer stay, a pass for a calendar week (Monday through Sunday) is only 12.50.

I can only echo Thomas Milligans idea.
Wife and I were born in Chicago/Detroit resp., but have lived in small town for 30 years. Hence one might think we'd find Vienna intimidating. But the trams go everywhere, and are quite well mapped/marked (there's a route map inside each with all the stops shown, which you can compare to the sign on the platform at each stop). We trammed from Operahouse to Schonbrun Palace, then to the NW side where the heurigers are, then back to Operahouse.
There are many Tabak shops downtown from which to buy the tickets, and you don't have to even trouble with learning the machine.
