Haunted castles?
I have heard that there ia a B&B haunted castle which I think is near Edinburgh in Scotland. Can someone clarify this for me and maybe a bit more info.

Other than that I am staying in Stirling, various parts of England (one week doing survey trips all over the place), SWitzerland, oh yeah, around France (not inland), Austria but only to Salzburg and the west part of Germany through the BLack Forect. I would be grateful for advice on your experiences in staying at any castles in these countries.

Thank you

I think it's likely that most castles have haunted stories. Two castles that I know of near Edinburgh that are now hotels are Dalhousie Castle and Borthwick Castle.

We stayed in Dalhousie Castle last summer (actually got married there) and they told us a couple stories of hauntings. We loved the castle - it was like something out of a fairy tale. However, it is about a 20-30 minute car ride into Edinburgh, which can be inconvenient. We stayed in central Edinburgh for most of our stay and then moved to the castle our last 2 nights. Their URL is http://www.dalhousiecastle.co.uk.

Berkeley Castle is supposed to be haunted by the ghost of King Edward II. His howls from 1327 are supposed to still be heard in the castle. He was executed at the instigation of his long-suffering wife and her lover, Mortimer. His execution was particularly vicious due to Edward II being homosexual in an age much less tolerant than ours. His executioner, a man named Ogle, heated up a metal poker, had two other men strip Edward naked and pin him down with a wooden door, and proceeded to burn Edward's innards. Executed without a mark on him, Edward seemed to people afterwards to have died of natural causes.
