Has the word search been working for you today?

I remember following a thread a few weeks ago and I am trying to find it again. I put in all the key words I remember plus some of the contributors that I know were on it. The search is not pulling up any recent threads, just ones that are months old. Is anyone else having this problem or am I living in the State of Confusion today? thanks, Deborah

Hi Deb - Did you post on it?

If yes, you've probably got more chance of finding it by clicking on your own name and searching through your recent posts.

Or ... if you remember someone else who posted on it, search their posts.

Steve, no, I didn't have anything to contribute so I did not post on it, I was just following it when it was more active. In the thread a family was trying to decide on a base between Spain and France near the mediterranean. I searched for both Maribel and Zeppole and it didn't come up. I did save a web site for www.toprurals.com that I took from it and when I put that in the search it still wasn't found

suze, thanks, you made me feel not so crazy,

thanks, Deborah

It doesn't work to search for a word, phrase, title, or poster's screen name. What will work though is to find a thread where Maribel or Zeppole posted and then click on their screen name.

thank you one and all, I did find it just as suggested by janis and I knew Maribel had so many contributions it would almost take as long as searching fodors!!! Luckily I only had to go through 120 of Zeppole's always helpful posts before I found it

thanks so much, now I know how to actually do a search here Deborah

I don't know if they've improved the search or not, as it does work to search for a single word often. If you can narrow it down to one rather unique word that is best. Putting in people's names won't work unless it is in print within the post, not just someone who posted on the thread, I believe.

IN any case, I think that thread is too new to be brought up with the search, and that could be the problem there.

I'm afraid the search has really deteriorated in the last few months. It's a big reason why we decided to upgrade the Forums to a new platform with a completely new search. The "new" forums debuting in February have a much more sensitive search.

In the meantime, let me know if there are any threads you can't find. I've become quite good at finding "lost threads" after receiving a fair amount of email related to our search.

Just curious---was the thread that Maribel posted the right thread?

Thank you, as always, for your patience and good cheer.

Christina, how old must a thread be to become available by a single word search?? Just curious. I was using the right places without any success. What I didn't remember was that I had commented within the thread so I could have just search my own name UGH

Now if I could just get this to post, this is my third try, but that's another thread entirely Deborah

Katie, Yes, thank you it was the right thread and I truly have had problems posting the last few times. Sorry, I appreciate this site so much and I don't want to sound like a complainer!! Deborah

No need to apologize---it's a valid complaint for sure. Or we could call it "an observation".

Either way, the search really should work in order for everyone to get the most they can out of this resource. I'm really looking forward to having a new search. Can you tell?

Still..if anyone has a stumper they want to throw at me feel free. I've been testing some searches on our dev site.

It really doesn't work even for single-word searches. Yes, you will find some threads -- but not all, or even a tiny % of, threads containing that word.

Just stick w/ katie here and look forward to the updates (and pray the "improvements" don't mess up something else )

Katie (Editor):

I have tried to search for my screen name and have had no luck. The reason I'd like to do that is that if I post a message but don't check for replies every day, or more frequently, I have to page through many other posts to find my original one and see if there were any replies. If I could search for my screen name I would quickly see all my posts and could zero in on the one I was looking for very quickly. Will this be fixed?

No. It never, ever works, and I could kick myself for even wasting time thinking it might. I just spent 20 minutes trying to find the link to that video about how fast our knowledge base is changing......and, of course, got nothing.

This isn't rocket science - why the heck can't Fodor's fix it?

Don't "search" on your name. If you click on your screen name, every thread on which you have ever posted will display in the thread list.

Don't use the search box - simply click on your screen name at the top of the page. Or click on your post here in this thread. If you click on your name here, the same thing happens.
