Has anyone overnited in Antwerp??

I have searched this post extensively for hotel recommendations in Antwerp and have only seen references to large "chain" type hotels for $100+. I am looking for a small, European style accomodations $100 max. close to the cathedral or Grote Markt area. I have read that the train station area is too seedy. Maybe a B&B?? Any personal recommendations. There doesn't seem to be very many hotels with web sites to help me evaluate the web listings. Thank you.

Hi Karen,
The area north of the Central Station may be a "bit seedy", especially at night, but the De Keyzerlei right in front is a nice and safe avenue.
Someone on this board recently gave thumbs up to the Florida Hotel, a family run place which is right on it.
Their site: www.hotelflorida.be
Enjoy Antwerp!

I have stayed at the Hotel Euro in Antwerp and liked it a lot. It is a small "European-style" hotel, within a few blocks of the market square and the cathedral. The rooms are about $95 for a double and about $85 for a single, with baths and a very nice buffet breakfast (also free parking in the city lot next door, if you have a car). Here is a website: http://www.hotelgenie.com/antwerp/euro.shtml

I recently stayed at Hotel Prinse on Kezerstrat -- sort of halfway between the station and the cathedral. It was $108. USD per night, including breakfast. The doubles were about $119 I think. The building is historic, but the rooms are very modern. The fronty desk was very personable and helpful.

http://www.hotelprinse.be/

I stayed at "Hotel Villa Mozart" for 6 nights last April. The Hotel is right acrross The Cathedral, around the corner of Grote Markt. It is an old european hotel, nice and clean with helpful staff, even under Best Western Chain. The rate is about your budget including good breakfast. Excellent located with many restaruants an shops around, 3 minutes walk to Metro entrance.

Karen,
Hotel Antigone, Jordaenskaai 11-12, 2000 Antwerpen - phone +32 3-231 66 77 - fax +32 3-231 37 74. It's a small hotel but a MODERN one!
They don't seem to have a website. Only one small pic on www.visitantwerpen.be
Just thought of another one (typical but a little more expensive): Hotel 't Sandt, phone +32 3 232-93-90 - fax +32 3 232-56-13 (http://www.hotels-belgium.com/antwerp/tsandt.htm) - email: [email protected]

Myriam,
Since you live there....what can you tell me about Hotel Eden? Anyone have any experience with this facility? I am leaning towards Hotel Prinse due to the convenient location.

Thanks everyone.
Karen, If you want to stay close to Grote Markt and cathedral, Eden would not be a good choice. It is in the (Jewish) diamond quarter and fairly dead after office hours. I cannot tell you anything else about the hotel, hardly ever come in that neighbourhood.
For a good experience of Antwerp both day and night (lots of lovely small restaurants, bars, etc.) the best area is around Grote Markt. I think Prinse would be a good choice although it may not be the European style hotel you had in mind. You won't spend much time in your room anyway, will you?
Have fun in Antwerp!

Mauld, take it!
Location is superb, at Groenplaats, a very nice square at 2 steps from the cathedral and Grote Markt. It's a busy square with lots of cafés but I'm sure the hotelroom windows are double/triple glazed!

That is a great price for Hotel Hilton, Maud. Mind telling me which site was offering that? Do you think it was discounted as a last minute booking? You're right Myriam, we prob. won't be spending much time in our room. Clean, comfortable and convenient is what I am looking for....maybe I should add cheap too!
Karene, On the www.hilton.com site their lowest offer for a twin or a king room is euro 120 incl. buffet breakfast. Unbelievable!

It was via Rosenbluth (my company's corporate travel agency), and my room is described as a Hilton Value Plus, King Room. No mention of breakfast included--but for the 30 euros difference, I can buy my own!
