Has Anyone Been to Orebic???

Hi all,
I am considering stopping in Orebic for a night in August on the drive from Split to Dubrovnik. Has anyone been there? Is it worth the overnight stop or would you recommend skipping it and using the extra night somewhere else. We were going to spend the overnight in Castle Villa Antonio and spend a day in the area. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you so much!!

I don't know anything about the Antonio but Orebic is a pretty seaside town with good facilities for those cruising the Croatian coastline. Driving from Split I think you could save some time (and have some fun) taking a ferry to the long isthmus where Orebic is located.

The biggest draw of Orebic is that it is opposite Korcula--a short ferry ride away. You will have to travel up the Peljesac peninsula to get to Orebic, so if you are looking to maximize your time, it may be better to stop somewhere on the coast. Ston might be a good alternative, as it is not as far on the peninsula and the seafood is famous there. The peninsula is beautiful, so havea nice time exploring.

We were in Croatia last summer and stayed in Orebic for 3 nights at the Villa Antonio. First it is a rather long drive from the coast road that connects Split to Dubrovnik. My memory says about 1/1/2 hours each way. Orebic is a small tourist town which seems to be full of tourists from northern Europe taking a sunny beach holiday beach holiday. Beach is ok but the water was cold once you dipped below a couple of feet. A few restaurants along the water.
It is hard to describe the Villa Antonio except to note that Antonio is I think abit odd. The main house is up a steep hill in a vineyard. He will tell you that it is a 10 minute walk to the beach. It may be a 10 minute walk to the beach if you are a mountain goat on fire and need to get into the ocean really fast. The road down the hill is paved but very very steep and the rest of the way is on a combination of soil and rocks. We walked down for 15 minutes and were nowhere close to the beach. It took 30 minutes to get back to the main house.
The main house is quite nice and looks like someone's luxury Mansion. Many of the rooms are in the back in another building. When we arrived last year the AC had not been hooked up to our room and it was 95 degrees out. We therefore had ourselves upgraded to the room available with AC which was the Presidential suite for much more money.
The suite was quite large with two small bedrooms with cheap beds and matresses. Three separate AC's that usually worked. Large living room with antique furniture that we thought were bought in a garage sale. One large bathroom with jacuzi tub which was unusable as the tub would take over an hour to drain as it is connected to the plumbing of the kitchen downstairs. The other bathroom was tiny and sported a sink, toilet and shower in the space of a small closet. Toilet in front of sink so you could be doing your business and brushing your teeth in the sink at the same time. No curtains for the large shower window that looks into the top floor balconies of the back annex hotel rooms. Bath towels that are so skimpy one would not use them for the kitchen.
The one great feature of this suite was a grand terrace with a beautiful view of the sea.
You can have dinner at the hotel which may be either buffet or served to you depending on what they are doing for that night. Decent home cooked style food. Vile wine. Moderate price for dinner.
Antonio does allow you to borrow his car sometimes or he will have someone drive you downtown.
It is the strangest hotel I have ever stayed in. Rank amateur might be the kindest way to put it. I think he has built everything without any professional experience in building anything and running the hotel in the same way. Nice guy but the experience is nothing like we expected from the website. Also cost us alot more than we anticipated.

My pick of where to stay:

1. Korcula (by far)
2. Orebic
3. Ston (the only other reason to stay here is the beautful scenary between here and Orebic).
