Happy Swiss National Day!
In celebration of all things Swiss, today we are going to eat chocolate, do some cleaning, go for a hike, and not worry at all about crime*.
*Yesterday, a woman left an Hermes bag on a Basel tram. Some teen-agers noticed it. They opened her wallet to see if her ID was in it. It was, along with several hundred francs. They then took the purse up to the tram driver, told him her ID was in it, and he said someone would try to contact the owner within the hour. Every franc, every centime was still in the lady's wallet when they handed over the bag.
Nobody thought this behavior was the slightest bit unusual.

Happy erste August! My 11 year old son has been waiting 364 days for this day.
The weather looks great, our local store was actually open to buy the basics, the Feldschlossen is in the fridge and our Finnische Kerzen are ready to be lit.

Feldschlossen!I forgot to mention that...ours is in the fridge too. Although I prefer Warteck.
And Rosti is on the dinner menu...
We went down to the Rhine last night to watch the Basel fireworks. Quite nice, although not quite as spectacular as some of July's fireworks courtesy of Mother Nature.

Going to check in one more time as long as I can write a sentence that more or less makes sense. After a bottle of chardonnay and a nice steak, we are teaching the kids how to make smores on our outside fire. Then it's off to the alp (above our house) to let off firecrackers and light our finnish candle. Wishing you all a great evening from beautiful, cloudless Switzerland!

Damn chocolate....OK if I must do this to honor the Swiss, I'll eat some chocolate too.
The things I do for my Fodor pals.
Have a fun day, wish I were there.

I'm not sure what you mean, Dax, but Basel was anything but sedate last night--there were street parties all around town.
Tonight, we were out walking in the hills of Ettingen (just got back) and had a great 360 view of the local fireworks displays in all the smaller suburbs.

It was a perfect night. A warm breeze swept through the green valley and wound its way up the majestic mountains. Bright orange fires could be seen on various mountain peaks as families got together and let off fireworks. An accordian could be heard in the distance and one of the local yodelers let out a short jodel for the whole town to hear.
Nothing sedate about the August 1 in Switzerland. It's a celebration of Switzerland, families, neighbours and boys happily playing with fire and firecrackers.

Glad to hear that it's no longer sedate like when I used to experience it. We actually got invited to a swiss celebration here in the San Francisco Bay Area complete with jodeling, dancing, flag throwing and a recorded message from the swiss president. Came home with a bunch of goodies, the swiss consulate is always so generous.
