>Do you know why you are so hated?<
Hey, there are plenty of poor, uneducated, and disenfrachised in the world. Look at the Mexicans who risk their lives to come to the U.S. for a better life? Do they hate us? NO. They want to be like us.
Look at the Wahabi sect in Saudi. They want to kill every kafur (infidel) in the world. They are funded by Saudi millionaires who wouldn't have a pot to p*ss in if it weren't for the U.S., which buys their oil.
If it weren't for the U.S., these Arab nations would be so poor they would be selling camels for a living. They hate us, but they NEED us.

Could we please get back on the subject at hand, namely to help people who have questions about carry-on items and the changes in things you can take onto flights to and from the UK? I think the political discussion is irrelevant here, and I'd like to see this thread stay up and continue to be helpful rather than be taken down.
I have a question of my own that I can't find an answer for, though perhaps the answer is buried here somewhere. Are wrist-watches allowed on UK flights? They have batteries, but aren't on the lists I've seen of "electronic" items that are now banned.

Sorry Doug - I cross posted before I saw your post. I'm not sure about the watches - interesting point.
Hand lugageis currently allowed out of Australia. No liquids/gels allowed on flights to the US, but are on UK flights which seems strange.

Hate? I don't hate anyone. I am a good Catholic woman.
I don't think hatred is behind my plea to profile would-be terrorists. It is just common sense.
To Doug, I highly doubt they are going to make you take off your watch. That would push people over the edge. Afterall, would you EVER put a $7,OOO.OO Rolex in your checked luggage? I wouldn't fly if I had to do that.

I spoke with an agent at AA last night. I'm honestly not sure how accurate his info was (he said normal baggage rules were 40 pounds, while I'm pretty sure it's 50).
Anyway, he said no carry-on bags to or from the UK. However, they are loosening their luggage restrictions; you can now check your carryons and they won't be restrictive about weight (within reason). You are limited to the listed items in the plastic bag.
As for flights within the US or Europe that don't connect in London, you can carry-on bags and electronics, just not the gel/liquid stuff.

Thank you, Doug/Fodor's Editor. If people want to discuss this situation politically, they can go over to the "U.S./U.K. Terrorist Plot" thread. As for me, I'm focused on traveling to England in September, and I just want to know what to expect.
I don't know about watches either....good question.

I interpret the TSA website as telling us that carry-on luggage is permitted flying into the U.K.. We just can't take liquids or gels. On the return, we have to follow the Brits' restrictions, which is bare basics.
I just received an e-mail from my travel agent (from whom I bought my airline ticket). She says I am interpreting the TSA site correctly. She also advised that I 'hang loose" (good advice for us all!
), and suggested that code levels may go down after the summer season ends. I'm traveling in mid-September, so yes, it might change by then.

Note that British Airways is enforcing the more stringent rules on THEIR flights FROM the US TO the UK as well as flights departing the UK.
AFAIK they're the only ones requiring this on eastbound TATL flights, but this is a changing picture so check with your carrier before packing.

These new regularations were hell, but only because my group did not know about them. I spent all day yesterday with 30 foreign exchange students going to the US from Madrid, all via London, and as the airport left, they all got stranded and we had to redo the itineraries so that they were no longer going through London. To be on the safe side, we told them all no hand baggage and stuff ended up having to be thrown away, which was very upsetting to a lot of them.
I understand the rules and am not one to have a large carry on anyway, but I am not at all comfortable checking my laptop, and feel strongly that if iPods and the like are banned, well, then so shoud the screaming babies who provoke their use. The no books thing is also a drag and frankly, terrorism exists on all levels and adjusts itself to the dimensions it must work within. So, this is only going to require more creativity in the end, but while that is going on, the paranoia is real and growing.

Grow up. This doesn't have anything to do with Bush. Iran fell under the Carter administration, which started the ball rolling with Islamic extremism.
Nixon was president during the '72 Olympics when the Palestinian terrorists murdered members of the Israeli team.
I think Clinton was president when Benezir Bhutto fled Pakistan and Mushariff took over. Clinton was also president when the World Trade Center was FIRST BOMBED.
The situation in Afghanistan was started by the Russians.
So, stop blaming Bush. He is an easy target for a very complicated situation.

Hold is British speak for checked bags.
I think laptops and all are still allowed if you can have a carryon; if you can't, they aren't and have to be checked. That's how I understand it.
BTW AA.com has updated their rules for bags and has a very good summary of what you can take where.

I am traveling with AA,to Rome August 27th via Chicago. I checked their web site for more info.
<All Flights Within The United States AND International Flights To/From The United States
No liquids or gels of any kind will be permitted to pass security checkpoints or in carry-on baggage. This includes all beverages, shampoo, suntan lotion, creams, tooth paste, hair gel, perfumes and other items of similar consistency.
All liquid and gel items must be placed in checked baggage only. Customers may carry-on approved electronic devices such as personal computers, electronic games, and cell phones, except when traveling from or through the United Kingdom.
Exception: Baby formula or breast milk if a baby or small child is traveling; prescription medicine with a name that matches the passenger's ticket; and insulin and essential other non-prescription medicines.>
I wonder if I can carry aboard a small traveling bag and a hairbrush..Is bad enough not being able to brush our teeth but I hate going around looking like a mad woman.

It's never been said that hairbrushes aren't allowed. As far as brushing your teeth, a friend made me think about those portable things that you put on finger....I don't remember which company does it but it's something that just came out in the last 6 months or so...that would work to freshen up....but I don't know if it's something that will be banned or not....
