Hamburg Taxi
We will be arriving in Hamburg via train (at the main train station) from Frankfurt after a long overnight flight from the US. If all goes well, we'll arrive around 6 or 7 in the evening. Will there be taxis outside the tain station at this time, or will we have to call one? Also, will 1 taxi accommodate 4 adults and at least four pieces of luggage and carry-ons? After renting a car in Paris, and having to cart our suitcases on our laps, I am a bit concerned. Certainly don't mind hailing 2 taxis. Thanks so much. Oh, yes, we will be traveling to Le Meridian.

The availability of taxis will not be an issue, at any hour. You will either need two regular cabs, or pick a minivan. You are not forced to take the first taxi in line at the rank.
But, the hotel is only 1/4 mile away, so some taxi drivers will probably get a bit annoyed with such a short ride - though they must take you there.

Exit Central station at either side (i.e. towards Glockengiesserwall (Westside) or Kirchenallee (Eastside). At either side there will be plenty of cabs waiting.
As you will likely arrive on one of the tracks closer to the Westside, I would recommend to exit there. It is also the quieter (and somewhat more pleasant side of Central Station). You want to make sure in any case you take the escalator up to the North Side of the staion to exit (i.e. the escalator in the direction the train entered the hall). For Westside turn left.
The cab ride to the Meridien is a short one and should not set you back more than EUR 8.00 - EUR 10.00.
Normally you would take the first cab in the row. If you should have a choice, my preferred company is Hansa Taxi 211 211. You recognize them by their (phone) number (040- 211 211) which is printed on the side. They usually have some courteous drivers, clean cars and are extremely reliable.

And no, I would not recommend to walk. It is a walkable distance, but I would not venture for the first time with luggage. After all it is at least a 15 min. walk.
The most advisable route would take you along Lange Reihe and then left into Gurlittstr. The hotel would be to your left at the end of the st.
But again: rather take a cab with luggage.

There will be a long line of taxis waiting. All are large enough for 4 persons, but the sedans might be too small to hold your baggage.
So better take a minivan or station wagon which is waiting in line. Tip generously, because the metered fare will be small.
