Greek Islands in mid may...will everything be open?

I'm in the early stages of planning a trip to the Greek Islands( not sure which yet) and 2-3 days in Athens.

Someone told me that much in the island s willbe closed until Jun 1.....can that be true?

thanks

We were in Santorini last week of April and first week of May this year. Everything was open.

The charter flights from northern Europe normally start last week April/first week May, so most things should be open by mid May.

Most things will be open in large resorts or villages in May, but tavernas on remote islands and beaches will still be closed not opening until around early June.
Also tourist ferry routes only start/increase services in early June, this is a very variable factor (what isn't with a greek ferry...).

My recommendation: don't spend any more than 2 days in Athens and then head for Piraeus and a ferry to the islands. Make sure that the ferries are running between the islands you're interested in, otherwise you may be spending a lot of time on one island (which is okay but remember that there are a finite number of things you can do on a small Greek island). The good thing about going early - far less tourists to have to deal with.

However, in 2006 Greek Easter falls on 23 April so the islands may be in full swing early. Greek Easter generally rings in the beginning of the holiday season on the islands. Definitely check the ferry schedules and plan accordingly. Also, consider taking a few days in Turkey - you won't be disappointed!
