Greece for first timers
We are planning on going to Greece at the end of June. We have two kids aged 6 and 4.
We want to stay in an apartment or Villa.
Where should we go to find legit accomodations at a reasonable price and is Athens good for kids?
What are the beaches like?
What islands are kid friendly?
Any information on Greece is appreciated.
Thanks

Your questions are pretty wide open - there are so many possibilities in Greece. You don't say where you are coming from or specific interests but as you mention Athens, I assume you are flying in to there. If you were travelling from within Europe, I'd consider a package holiday to a family friendly resort to minimise long travel and other hassles for the children. I personaly wouldn't bother taking a 4 and 6 year old to Athens and there are plenty of other ruins to visit, if you are interested. Beaches vary from lovely shallow sandy bays to rocky coves - there are thousands. The Greeks usually adore children and are very tolerant of them.
Here's one suggestion from Athens based on a relaxing family holiday with the chance for some exploring - there could be hundreds of other possibilities.
Hire a car and head to the Peloponnese to the small and not over commercialised resort of Finikounda. It is surrounded by safe sandy beaches for the children and has several places of interest within an easy drive, e.g. Pylos, Methoni and Koroni with impressive castles, the ruins of Ancient Messene and the beautiful bay of Voidikilia. Other fantastic sites on the Pelopnnese could also be reached with longer drives or by staying in more than one base.
I'd trust Gordon and Wendy who run this accommodation site, having met them when they were reps for a travel company:

Just got back from Athens and Santorini. Had a wonderful time. There is great info on this board. Just plug in Greece into Search and enjoy reading.
Now, for some unsolicited advice: I don't recall seeing ANY small children among all us tourists. (Some extremely bored adolescents, but no children) Athens is interesting to most of us adults only long enough to see the historical sites and small children care nothing about those. Athens is not a pretty city full of things to do. Santorini is gorgeous but again, I saw no small children.
If your heart is set on Greece, don't let ME stand in the way, but I would personally save it for a later time and choose a more family-friendly place or go now and let the wee ones stay with loved ones.

Greece is a large and diverse place and although I agree that I wouldn't have thought either Athens or Santorini had much of interest for small children, there are many places totaly suitable for a family holiday. After many holidays in Greece, we are off to Crete next Tuesday with all the family for the first time - including my 2 and a half year old grandson. We have chosen the family resort of Almyrida and it will be primarily a chance to relax with the family and get some warm sunshine, often in short supply in the UK.

Athens is not for small children and in Santorini you won't see many because it is a 'romantic' place with spectacular scenery but not very good beaches for small kids.
But There are PLENTY of other options with nice big sandy beaches like Rhodes, Crete, Paros, Naxos, Sifnos, Skiathos to name a few!!!!

Thanks for the responses, yes my questions are pretty wide opened because we are still in the planning stage.
We enjoy taking our kids abroad, for the cultural experience and to teach them to have an open mind. No, they won't remember everything at their ages, but at what age do you remeber everything? That is what pictures and video recordings are for, to help us remember.
I am not so much looking for a holiday of sighseeing, it is more for our kids, we are looking for beautiful beaches and friendly people.
