The Hotel Krasnopolsky is located right at the Dam, in the middle of Amsterdam. It's one of the top hotels, might just fit your price ceiling.

Check its website for pictures, map and rates: http://www.tripadvisor.com/Hotel_Rev...d_Holland.html

In 2007 my wife and I stayed at the hotel Amsterdam, it's right off of Dam square, at 93-94 Damrak. The web link is www.hotelamsterdam.nl

We stayed in rowhomes-turned-hotels (aka boutique hotels) and loved the experience. They have their quirks tho...some don't have elevators, some have smallish bathrooms but we liked them better than a "normal" impersonal hotel room. All of the hotels we stayed in were in the Jordaan region which can appear far on a map but we never felt we were far from the sights...we easily took the tram or just walked.

These were ones we stayed in:
~Hotel Toren - (www.hoteltoren.nl ) 4star, 2nd hotel we stayed at, better H2O pressure, better than 't Hotel - Keizersgracht 164
~'t Hotel (http://www.amsterdamby.com/thotel/pages/profile.htm) - no elevator, Leliegracht 18

These are others that were recommended to us:
~Hotel Zandbergen, a B&B which lies between Museumplein and Vondelpark. - HIGH rec from amyb on fodors
~Canal House Hotel (http://www.canalhouse.nl) Kreizergracht 158
~Hotel Agora (http://www.hotelagora.nl/) Singel 462
~Maes B&B and Herenstraat B&B (http://www.bedandbreakfastamsterdam.com/maes.html) Herenstraat 26
~Hotel Wiechmann (http://www.hotelwiechmann.nl/) prinsengracht 328-332
~Sunhead of 1617 B&B - apartment Herengracht 154 (http://www.amsterdam-accommodation.n...gracht154.html)

We are going in September and staying at a The Collector. Our dealings with the innkeeper, Karel, have been wonderful. Rates are 120 Euro. It's conveniently located near the Van Gogh and Rijks museums.

You have a link here for the Hotel Agora. We stayed there a few years ago and loved it. It's walking distance to everywhere, the tram stops right outside the door, there's a little grocery store next door, and even a laundromat close by. I would highly recommend it and it should be at or near your price range.

Go to the Amsterdam forum at Trip Advisor.

Look for a thread re Priceline wins started by MrJohnMD... you'll see all sorts of top quality hotels being won for well under 100 USD a night including the Kras...

Check out the SAS Radisson. Don't know what the summer rates might be, but had 7 nights in April for average of 140Euros, which is under $200. This hotel would ordinarily attract a lot of business travelers, I suspect, and business travel is down. With the special rate, was little more expensive than much lesser rated hotels. Note: rate did not include breakfast. See my further comments under topic requesting "Hotel in Amsterdam on Canal" by sobster

Check the current rates for the Hotel Ambassade. Don't rely on the website rates (which have doubles starting at 195), contact the hotel and perhaps they will give you a lower rate. www.ambassade-hotel.nl
I loved the hotel. Great location, quirky but comfortable and convenient rooms, nice breakfast, elevator, helpful staff, and a lovely old-world feel without being fusty. There is a range in room sizes though, and I think some can be quite small.
