Grafenwohr to Prague day trip transportation

We are planning a trip to visit friends in Grafenwohr. We were hoping to book an inexpensive bus trip through the ITR office on post for a day trip to Prague. Unfortunately, the trip will not be offered when on the dates we need them.

We would like to take the train to Prague just for the day. can anyone offer some advice on the best location to catch the train, customs, cost, and how to get around in Prague?

I have read other posts and seems like the best thing to do is to avoid taxis. How is public transportation in Prague?

I can't really address the transport to and from "Graf" (as we've usually called that place) but as far as transport IN Prague, you can easily get to the places you'll want to see by either tram or subway (Metro) or both.

The signage is good for these and there are announcements in English as to the next station, etc., even on some of the tram routes.

My only concern here is doing this all in ONE day vs. at least an overnight.

From Grafernwoehr to Prague is an 8 hour trip, with four changes of conveyances (bus, 3 diff. trains). So a day trip to Pague ismprobably out of the question.

One of the reasons why Grafenwoehr is a military training ground is that it is sort of "at the end of the world". It was that before WWII for the German Army, and ever since WWII for the Ameriacvn Army and German Budeswehr.

You can get the schedules for public transportation to Prague on www.bahn.de

If you can't get a tour bus, the fastest way to get to Prague would be by rental car. While train connections may be close to absurd, Grafenwöhr is well connected to the A6/D5 motorway going from Germany via Plzen to Prague. It's some 250km or 160mls. You can leave the car at one of the Park+Ride lots at the outer ring road and take the subway from there. But still, you would need 2 1/2 hours to Prague, plus travel time on the subway. So you will probably spend 6 hours just to get there and to get back.
