Amsterdam hotels aren't cheap and "within a budget" means different things to different people, but here is one that we found very decent and reasonable:

Mercure Arthur Frommer
Address: Noorderstraat 46, Amsterdam
Telephone: 020/622-0328

I would estimate that the low end rate for a single at this property would be in the area of 100 Euros, but I'm guessing a bit so you'd have to check.

It is a nicely-kept hotel featuring 90 renovated units in an attractive building on a quiet back street in the canal area off Vijzelgracht. It's an easy walk to the Rijksmuseum and Leidesplein (sp?). While many AMS hotels do not have rooms large enough for more than two people, the Mercure Arthur Frommer has a limited number of such rooms available. There is a small bar downstairs and an excellent breakfast room. Again, rates are quite reasonable, by Amsterdam standards.

If you're REALLY looking for budget accommodations, you might want to run a search and check out "The Flying Pig". It's more on the hostel end of things, but they've got a couple of locations and they have private rooms. (I haven't stayed there myself; just noted them when we were there).

Good luck!
Try Priceline.com. I'm staying at the Renaissance for $62.00 per night at Christmas.

www.eurocheapo.com has low budget hotels listed. Their really cheap doubles are under EUR 55.

Tink,

We rent out our tastefully and modern decorated apartment in Amsterdam for short stays.

It is an elegant, spaciously designed apartment on the third floor of a modern building with an elevator.
You will find all the comforts of home: a seperate bedroom with a queensize double bed, a comfortable living room with a corner sofa and a diningarea, a fully equipped kitchen with a second dining area and a bathroom with a shower, toilet and sink.
The appartment is equipped with 2 color tv's with cable connection, one in the living room and one in the bedroom, a VCR, a stereo system and a high speed internet connection.
The livingroom faces the balcony where you can admire the lively squandering of the neighbourhood street. The appartment is located in 'De Pijp' (also called the Quartier latin of Amsterdam), just around the corner of the famous daily Albert Cuyp market, behind the Heineken Brewery and on walking distance from the museum quarter. De Pijp is currently one of the trendiest and most upcoming neighbourhoods of the city.

Check out our website:
http://home.tiscali.nl/amsterdam/

For more info email us on: [email protected]

If you are staying in Amsterdam for more than 3 nights, consider apartment with www.citymundo.com. We recently stayed in one apartment at Ferdinand Bolstraat, near to Albert Cuyp Market for only Euro83/nite (2 person). A wonderful host (didn't stay in) and there is a tram stop just in front of the apartment. Also walking distance to the museums and Vondelpark. Love the fireplace especially when it's cold and rainy now. Do take note of the steep staircases in these apartments in Amsterdam.

Good point about the narrow, very steep stairs in a lot of Amsterdam budget hotels. I wrenched my knee quite badly whilst attempting to bring my luggage down from a top floor room in Amsterdam so be careful.

When we are in Amsterdam we always stay at Hotel de Filosoof in the Anna van den Vondelstraat. Very reasonable rates, excellent location close to Leidseplein/city center. Ask for one of the 'big' rooms, they are only slightly more expensive than the 'standard' rooms and it's worth it IMO.
