I'm sure that you're right about this name. There are lots of others too, which just purposely contorted or maybe from stupidity.

I wonder what the first Elephant & Castle started. Maybe this was a pub or just a hotel. I guess we'll never know.

Good find!

Statia,

Actually the horny toad is a small desert lizard with lots of spines on its head resembling horns. Of course, the name may also have other impilcations.

I stayed at a great B&B on the Isle of Skye, Scotland called 'Tir Alainn' which means (in Gaelic) Beautiful Country. The view from the B&B was fantastic, too!

There used to be a restaurant in Cave Creek, AZ that was also called the Horny Toad. Cave Creek is just a piece down the road from Carefree, AZ, where the busiest intersection in town is where the streets Ho and Hum intersect. No joke!

Around the corner from my hotel in the Marais is the café Les Mauvais Garsons on the rue des Garsons.
I always did hang out with the bad boys

Well, we usually stay in apartments, and some of the agencies (Chez Vous, etc.) give them ridiculous names - "Ecstasy," or "Romance" - that tell you absolutely nothing about the apartment. I think we stayed in "Vivacite" one time, which I suppose could mean either vivacity (the apartment was far from vivacious), or perhaps "viva the city!" Maybe not.

On our honeymoon, we stayed at Pavillon de la Reine, and were awakened each morning by workers jackhammering outside our window. Apparently the queen was not in residence at the time, or I'm guessing she would have put a stop to it.

Outside of Camp David, in Thurmont, Maryland, there is the hokey named
"The Cozy Inn"... Churchill stayed there so it was good enough for me!

Before we got there, I had thought it was one of those dives that charged by the hour... funny that.

Not in Europe, but we always stay at the Biscuit Palace in New Orleans. It is a small guesthouse with an old Uneeda Biscuit advertisement painted across the side wall.

LOL Statia; I live near St. Louis, Missouri and there is a huge restautant complex named the Horny Toad at the Lake of the Ozarks, about 3 hours from here. Its located on "Toad Cove" and I always giggle when I see the billboards for it!

The only place that stands out in my mind is a cottage we stayed in when I was a child. It was called Elmer Fudd - and there was an appropriate "garden gnome" to match.

A friend of mine owns a motel in Greers Ferry Arkansas called the Sugar Maple Inn and she knows it annoys me because there isn't a Sugar Maple tree in sight and I would hardly call her motel an Inn...Also my sister lives in Mount Pleasant Michigan and I have yet to see anything resembling a mountain there !!!

But the worst is this restaurant called Garlic Louies and their garlic bread doesn't even smell like garlic let alone taste like garlic, one would think with a name like that they would be a little heavy handed on the garlic...but not this place...

cigalechanta,

We ate at the café Les Mauvais Garsons on our last trip and asked how the cafe got its name (but now I forget the answer!) Which hotel do you stay in?

Statia, I worked just up the beach from the Horny Toad many years ago at Mary's Boon & knew the owners (name escapes me.) As I recall, the owners who named the place were from the US West & it was named after the little critters. Those two locations had amazingly loyal, repeat customers.

VagabondLady, I bet you are disappointed in the "Toad Suck" Festival in Conway, AR, too. Not one single toad being sucked! I have a friend who was the first ever "Miss Toad Suck". The festival is named after a landing on the Arkansas river. That name cracks me up though.
