Second and third La Fontaine de Mars and Sancerre. Also Le Clos des Gourmets on Av. Rapp, and La Florimond on LaMotte Picquet and Les Olivades on Av. Segur. Olivades is a Patricia Wells rec, Provencal and very good--reserve. Florimond is just what you think of in a French neighborhood restaurant. We thought Thomieux was ordinary to not special with pretentious servers.

Just an update: We strolled the 7th in April and could not find Pirandello (sp?) along Rue Dominique (which I mentioned before). It is either defunct, or has moved (though their website is still up and sais Rue Dominique).

We enjoyed eating at Le Bosquet, 46 ave. Bosquet, just a few blocks from Rue Cler. It's an Alsatian brasserie with good service and good food.

So glad I found this thread. We're off to Paris on the Dec. 20 for 10 days and we are staying at the Hotel Leveque. These recommendations will come in handy. Thanks to all and happy holidays.

Betsy: You made ME smile. My husband and I also had our cafe and crossants at the bar at Cafe du Marche each morning. After 10 days, we were greeted like regulars. The last morning we didn't have enough Euros to cover the bill and we were waved off with a Bon Voyage and you can pay when you return to Paris...
Our favorite place was Bistrot de Papa on Avenue Bosquet near Ecole Militaire metro stop. We had 3 dinners there (out of 10 nights). A kilo of mussels made one entree, the best foie gras, steak tartare (not readily available near us) and reasonable prices. Cafe du Marche is good too.

Our trip was great, Dec 20 to Jan 1. Only one day of rain - of course it was the day we went to Versailles. Went to Disney Paris on Christmas day since most places in the city were closed. Nice take in but doesn't compare with Disney World. Explored most every district of Paris and found the people very pleasant despite what we've heard. A man in the Metro on Christmas morning even missed his train while helping us make change for the ticket (all windows were closed). Can't wait for our next trip.

Bistro Mazarine
42, rue Mazarine
6th arr (6eme)
M* Odeon
Average price: E26-30

Situated in the heart of the art gallery neighborhood in Paris, here you will experience the ‘vrai Paris’ (the REAL Paris) the true color of the left bank…regulars are greeted by staff like royalty…you will see Parisian families, young literary types, and local artists. There is a choice between a huge pavement terrasse and several rooms cluttered with a mix of art posters, souvenir photos, and drawings.

Food is definite home cookin’. Starters are simple like sweet juicy tomatoes and fresh mozzarella drizzled in olive oil and pepper, or garlicky escargots! Entrees are all served with rice or crispy home fries/potatoes, adorned with a slab of char-grilled lamb, colossal portions of grilled chicken in a mushroom sauce, or macaroni with gorgonzola cheese. Wine in available by the bottle, little pot, or glass.

Fast moving fast talking waiters create a hilarious atmosphere of a true left bank bistro, as well as FANTATIC eavesdropping!

Jenny,

If you have not already done so, go to www.pagesjaunes.fr/rc.cgi. You can search and see any area or Paris. Just type in the street and city. It is really fun to see Rue Cler and all of the shops and restaurants. This is a favorite area of ours also.
