Going to Switzerland for a Week - Would love to included another place
Hello All,
We are planning to to go switzerland for a week end of May.
I have heard people saying that a week is plenty for switzerland.
We wont mind dropping in another city of a differnet country ( we would prefer the travel time via train not to be alot)
What close by places would you guys suggest?
Thanks

Hi,
I agree that a week is not alot of time to spend in Switzerland. I also have to agree with Bob's suggestion of 4 nights in the Berner Oberland (we love Wengen!) and 3 nights in Luzern. That's a great "intro" to Switzerland.

Switzerland is gorgeous! Definitely can spend more than a week. Agree with Berner Oberland area, Interlaken boat ride is teriffic. Lauterbraunnen valley is breathtaking and lots of hiking in that area. It's also near Wengen. FYI, May is "shoulder" season. "Shoulder" is between ski and summer season so be prepared that some lifts may not be operating. Don't let that detract you, though. Still lots to do and IMHO one of the most beautiful places on earth. If you want to try another country, take the train to Dijon, France and a short drive to Beaune. Beaune has beautiful vineyards and is a charming town, if you're looking for different scenery and another culture.

Hi collage,
I also think you'll have plenty to do in two bases in one week in Switzerland!
However, if you really want, as brendalena says, different scenery and another culture, you can still get that in Switzerland. Just take the train down to Montreux, on Lake Geneva, which looks and feels a lot like the French Riviera. This is the French part of the country, with French architecture, cuisine, language, and lifestyle. Oh, and May is perfect along the lake!

My sister and I went last summer and it was fabulous. We rented a car in Zurich and drove all over. One of the side trips we took was into Italy. We drove to the Lake Como area and loved it. The lake is beautiful and the food was awesome. We stayed at the Grand Hotel Molstrasio and I could have stayed there forever.Good luck and have fun, you will see sights in Switzerland that will be stunning.

Instead of trying to convince of both the need to abandon your plans to visit some place other than Switzerland and of the folly of other advice you have been given regarding how long one "should" spend in the country I will, like brendalena and hockeynutmom, try and answer your question.
A lot will depend on where you are in Switzerland when you want to make this side trip. If you are in the west, say Geneva, then Lyon (1:40) or Annecy (0:40), in France, are good bets. Beaune is about 2:30 hours away.
If in or near Zurich, then Konstanz, Germany (1:15), with the option of a further ferry ride over to Meersburg (0:30) gives you an interesting 2 location trip.
If you are in Basel, then Colmar France, or Freiburg, Germany, at under an hour are up for consideration.
