Going to Liege...
My boyfriend and I will be in Liege for a weekend visiting family. From previous experiences my relatives have not proved to be very good tour guides. What should I tell them we would like to see and do while we are there? I don't really know what kind of experience we are looking for so please share your favorites so that I can sort through them. I just don't want to miss the best Liege has to offer. Thanks!

Hello cabrack -
We will be in the same area next week. I came across this website and haven't fully explored it, but it looks promising.

I hope the link works. I do not know how to do the "tiny url" thing.

Liege is a pleasant enough town but not much there for tourists compared with Brussels, Bruges, etc.
I'd suggest a short train trip to Maastricht Holland to see a very nice Dutch city or hop train to Brussels or Luxembourg if no car.
There are some great river gorges near Liege as well. And Spa, the home of Spa mineral water and a health resort.

Liege is an industrial city but one of the most fantastic things to do is to visit the weekend market along the river. The market is about a mile long and has everything.... fresh foods, produce, used goodies and antiques. Going with a French speaking person is a must. We felt a little at a loss with our high school French. The merchants are very nice but talk so fast that you miss half of what they are saying...especially when it comes time to talk money.

My sister-in-law lives outside of Liege in a village called Aubel and we have visited many times. Liege is a very industrial town and the sights there are limited. I agree with the previous poster who suggested Brussels or Brugge. From Liege, Brussels is only a little over an hours drive and Brugge is about another hour from there, if I remember correctly. I would highly recommend Brugge if you could only choose one. What a great little town/village. Take a canal ride, buy some chocolate or crystal, or just walk through the village. If you want to go the other direction, Aachen is a cool city in Germany right over the border. It can't be more than 45 mintutes to get there. If you want to go a little further, Cologne (Koln) is only another hour further and you can see one of the greatest cathedrals in Europe. Also, Maastricht in Holland is not very far and that is a fun shopping and drinking town. Most times there is a carnaval in the town center. I have also included a link below to the American Military Cemetary that is on the other side of Aubel, only about a half hour or so from Liege. It is one of the largest in Europe and well worth seeing. Have fun!

Dinant is worth a jaunt as this near to Liege town not only has a famous cathedral but is the jumping off point for boat trips thru the Ardennes on the Meuse River (Moselle in French, Mosel in German) - a few hour cruise thru a scenic gorge - you can also hire kay-yaks to do your own float. Believe there are caves here to explore as well.

Liege is cute - but I don;t think there are several days of things to do unless you head out to see some other towns. On a short day trip from Spa we saw a nice cathedral and an interesting folk life museum and some old houses. but - it;s not a tourist hot bed.
