I 2nd the motion... of using 'Walking Tour' maps. We had one for Venice with maybe 1/2 dozen different routes. You just follow one at your own pace, stopping to see (or not), various sites along the way. I'm sorry I don't remember the name of the one we used, but it was not a full guidebook, was written by a woman and was simply a collection of routes & maps for them.
