Glasgow hotel

I've been tearing my hair out looking for a hotel in Glasgow for next spring. I'd prefer the West End within easy walking distance of Byres Road, but central Glasgow is OK too.

My husband likes quieter, bigger rooms with at least a queen-sized bed, and I like a tub as well as a shower. Generally we prefer smaller hotels with lots of local atmosphere or nice B&B's.

Last but not least, we'd like to spend around £100-£120 per room per night.

So, can anybody help us?

Hi Mimar

Try One Devonshire Gardens in the west end of the city. About an eight minute stroll to Byers road and situated on one of the city's beautiful Victorian terraces. Full of atmosphere and used by many celebrities when they visit the city.

This boutique hotel is usually known as being very expensive but, being unsure of your actual travel dates I checked out 6th April to 9th April and they are offering a club room (with queen-sized bed) for £104 per night.

It's address is:-

Bill,

I just checked it out myself as it seemed too good to be true. Sure enough, some great rates. I may have to do some trip planning myself.

I know they do sometimes post good rates but well in advance.

I am not sure if you know the hotel but it is a number of old individual townhouses (I think seven) all joined together. Up until early this year one townhouse owner (slap bang in the middle) refused to sell and I understand the hotel had to build a corridor of sorts behind his home connecting with theirs at the other side his townhouse. Recently it was announced that the reluctant owner had eventually sold. The hotel now has the full terrace.

I pass it daily and love not only the Victorian style of the place but also the very nice area it is located.

I will be returning to Glagow early next year for my work and I have been having a look at serviced accommodation to cover us until we locate a flat. This won't work if you are looking for the full hotel experience, but the following 1 bedroom apartments in the West End look quite promising. They cost less than your budget but maybe you could use the money elsewhere.

Thanks, all. I rushed to look at One Devonshire Gardens for our dates in May, and, alas, a club room is £165/night.

GregY2, the 2 apartments look very good. I will pursue them. Apartments are a good way to get more space, though I kind of hoped for more people contact in Glasgow, the home of my ancestors.

Hi Mimar,
If my reading of the location of those 2 apartments is correct, then they are both very handy to Byres Road, particularly Queens Gate. You can go down to the corner of Byres & Higburgh Roads and get a very nice coffee at Tinderbox. You'll probably see more Glaswegians that way that you would at a hotel where guests will come from all over. You may even see us there! Good luck - Greg

Queensgate Apartments are on Dowanhill Street which runs almost parallel to Byres Road. You are indeed only a few minutes walk away, using Highburgh Road. A good number of students in this area too.

The Belhaven apartment faces on to a small road, then a few trees, then Great Western Road one of the busiest and noisiest roads in the city. If you choose the Belhaven make sure before confirming that it has a good measure of soundproofing. I had friends who had an apartment here and it was their first major expenditure. Some of these older style townhouses in this area still have single glass pane windows which don't stop the noise one little bit.

If you need more info I'll try and help.

Thanks to both GregY2 and Billbarr for their additional help. These apartments look very nice and ideally located. I suspect we will go with one of the two. I am inquiring about the noise issue at the Belhaven address. The rental agent has been very responsive.

Thanks for the clarification Bill, you are obviously a local.
As I said, we will be moving back to Glasgow in February and my employer will put us up in serviced accomodation while we look for a flat. I wasn't very impressed by their choice last time - the SACO apartments, in town - and have been looking for an alternative. I like the look of the Queens Gate apartment and I think it would be price competitive. We lived in a flat up near Hyndland Road last time - Kingsborough Gardens

hi Greg

If I had to choose it would be the Queensgate apartment simply because I like the area it is in and, as an oldie, I hate traffic noise.
There are many students in the area but I find that refreshing. Also, plenty of little lanes to explore and the closeness to Byres Road and the underground system there. The recently re-opened Kelvingrove Museum is a short walk away.

What am I doing? If you've been here before then you already have honourary Glaswegian status and will have a knowledge of our city and the places to visit!

Thanks for your thoughts anyway Bill. We spent 10 months in Glasgow, from May 2003 to March 2004 and never learnt enough to stay away. Actually my wife found the move difficult - she wasn't working - and she spent a lot of time walking around the West End, Kelvingrove Park etc so if anyone knows the streets, she does. Whay constitues an oldie by the way? Just so I know when I get there.

LOL Greg

Let's just say 'those of rapidly advancing years'

I hope your move goes OK and you settle down quickly. When exactly are you returning? At the moment it's almost dark at 3.30pm - I hope you arrive when the days are a little longer.

Bill,
Current plan is to leave here - Melbourne, Australia - 6th or 13th February to start work on the following Monday. I had hoped to start a month later but the people who are going to pay my salary wanted the earlier start. Here, of course, it is mid-summer and very dry. Melbourne is going onto level 3 water restrictions from January 1st and we will only be able to water the garden 2 days a week - no watering of lawns, no washing of cars. I'm hoping that the wether from mid-january won't be too bad, at least the days will be becoming visibly longer week by week and bulbs will start appearing etc. I was curious about the 'oldie' tag as I am 56 and have been referred to that way before. As I understand it, the definition of 'really old' is someone 15 years older than yourself.
