Hey fellow travelers, don't sell yourselves short! Try Della Palma in addition to/instead of Giolitti. Don't believe me? Just google Gelateria Della Palma and read the reviews. You won't be sorry.
Della Palma is located close to Giolitti. If you're standing on the portico of the Pantheon, head to the street in the one o'clock position across the square (same direction as jill h describes above) and walk a block or two. You'll see Della Palma on your left. It's before you make the right-hand turn that takes you to the second-rate Giolitti.

It is hard to find bad gelato in Rome but I usually do (or did as I don't go there anymore) at de la Palma. Giolitti is a good gelateria but San Crispino or, my favorite, Settimo Gelo, are the best. Some gelaterie specialize. Like da Quinto, behind Piazza Navona, has wonderful fruit flavored gelato. Alberto Pica near the Ghetto does a very interesting rice flavored gelato. It's hard to beat the chocolate gelato at Bar San Callisto in Trastevere. And if you just want a whole lot of gelato, the portions at Old Bridge are enormous.
