How about a nice Afghan blanket. In our area we often have them with local points of interest as part of the pattern. This is not something I ever saw anywhere in Europe.

My Bavarian MIL always loves macadamia nuts, California almonds, walnuts and pistachios. When she visits us, she takes some home for herself and her friends and family.

She also loves "Shout" stain remover. She says that she cannot find an equivalent in the stores in her area. (An aunt loves VO-5 hot oil treatments -- go figure) These probably are not good hostess gifts though.

We always bring a Nambe piece for some of our friends. Another just loves those Clinique bonus packs you get at department store promos.

Dirk Nowitzki jerseys might be a hit with the kids. My German nephews asked for them.

I agree about the good cotton clothing with or without an American logo, team, saying. We brought one of the sons of our hosts a sweatshirt that said "Hermosa Beach, California, Lifeguard" He wore it every single evening we were there.
