Hi:
What part of the country are you from? Pick something local and take that (food stuff is always good). Also, if they have been to the States do they have something that they can't get at home? When I was in high school I travelled to stay with a girl's family in the Dominican Republic. We had met at a tennis camp. I am from Pittsburgh so I took Clark Bars and a crystal Hershey Kiss shaped candy dish as a hostess present. They asked me to bring Chips A'hoy Cookies, a particular brand of potato chips and Velvetta (No accounting for taste).

As a Brit living in Massachusetts I often take gifts to the UK. The most appreciated are pancake mix and maple syrup (we sometimes get this from a local farm during sugaring season and pick up a couple of leaflets explaining the whole process).
