Gibraltar: Worth the time or not?
Everyone's heard of the Rock, so is it worth the drive there? I can either drive and stay there one night at the Rock Hotel or go to Jerez and see the horse performance. I hate to be so close and not see something so famous, but I don't want to be mad at myself for wasting my time. What would you do?

I've been to Gib twice -- once driving, and the other time on a cruise ship stop.
There are some great views and some great history. Also St. Michael Cave/Caverns is worth visiting along with the apes (don't get too close). We took a driver/private tour the second time.
The only problem with going there with your car is the customs/immigration getting off the rock, not to the rock. The Spanish make it very difficult in searching everything coming back into Spain. We were over 2 hours in line with our car waiting to leave. For me, that would be the only drawback from going there.

You are going to get a mixed bag on this one. It seems people either really dislike the place or enjoy it. I am one of the latter, in fact we went twice. Are you going with kids? Ours got a real kick out of watching the apes. Gibralter has lots of shops and some OK places to eat. We took the cable car up to the rock - you can see Africa from there - and walked down the long way, about 3 miles and quite nice. We passed the caves and took the tour. The caves are pretty nice and it was worthwhile.
I would park in Spain and walk in. Driving in is OK, but the Spanish customs leaving Gibralter by car can sometimes take well over an hour or even more

Definitely not worth the time - esp if the Spanish authorities decide to be difficult about security. They practically took our rental car apart before we got back into Spain - they even had the back seat pulled out and were scanning the entire bottom with a mirror. Some one in our hotel in Marbella told us they were on line more than 2 hours just getting back into Spain.

We drove from the Jerez/ El Puerto area in a rental car. I didn't know whether it was OK to cross the border into Gibraltar so we parked on the street and walked across through the border crossing. There were lots of taxis there.
I'm glad I went and might do it again but I thought we got overcharged by the taxi driver for a trip up Gibraltar. Do some research before hand if you do decide to go. ( The gondola was not running that day.) We walked back to the car...even across the runway and I made a special effort to get my passport stamped with a Gibraltar stamp on the way out because I wanted it as a unique passport stamp.
Also, the currency at the restaurant was pounds (no surprise when you think about it) We didn't have any pounds but were able to use credit cards. (The taxi driver was happy with euros)
