Getting to Rome from the Amalfi Coast
#2
Will you be in Positano or Amalfi? Directions will be different depending on where you are actually departing from.
From Amalfi, there is a bus to Rome, but it doesn't depart until 3:25 in the afternoon.

I wonder how you're getting there in the first place? When I did that back-and-forth trip, I took the train from Rome to Naples, then took the local Circumvesuviana train to Sorrento, and the big, blue SITA bus to Positano and back again.

A ferry runs between Positano and Naples in the summer. We were in Positano in early June and the ferry did not start operating until June 15. In Naples take a cab to the station and then get the train to Rome. There are very few ferries, so you will need to check times. If the ferry doesn't work for you, I suggest that you take the bus to Sorrento, the Circumvesuviana train to Naples and the train to Rome.

It's not very realistic to try to see Positano and Amalfi in half a day. You should arrange to leave your luggage at your hotel in Sorrento after you check out since you certainly can't lug it all over Positano and Amalfi. When you retrieve your luggage in Sorrento, the easiest option is taking the local train (Circumvesuviana - departs every 30 minutes) from Sorrento to Naples and then catch the train on to Rome.
I doubt a ferry would be convenient since they don't run very often and you would still need transportation from the dock to the train station.

Hi:
Ferries are running! Take a 9:25 from Sorrento arrive in Amalfi at 10:25.(€8.00)
Leave Amalfi by Ferry at 12:00 for Positano.(€6.00) Arrive Positano 12:20.
Take ferry for Napoli from Positano at 17:30 arrive 18:55.(€15.) Cab to station no more than €12. ask the driver first! Eurostar to Rome 1hr. 40 min. €36.
Ask all along the way the Tabacchi if they will hold your luggage . They do for a small fee.
The ferries will give you a beautiful view of the coast you can't get otherwise.
I did this thanks to www.walkingwithegods.com and their overall planning my itinerary.

I wouldn't drag my luggage on and off ferries and try to find somewhere that might store it. I don't think with only 1hr 35min in Amalfi, as suggested in the above post, is practical if you have to spend part of that time finding/arranging luggage storage and then allowing time to retrieve it.
