Hi! I am travelling with my husand and 3 kids to Italy next week. Trying to get some ideas of making the best use of our time to get from Florence to Siena, Pisa and Cinque Terre. We will be taking the train but not sure if we should just get a pass or buy daily tickets. Also, which place is the best to stay at, Siena or one of the villages at C. Terre. We will be spending a night in Florence.

Train travel in Italy ischeap. No need for rail passes.

There are family discounts as well as regular discount fares,

Siena and the CT are in opposite directions from Florence.

If you are planning on only one night, why not stay in F and make two daytrips.

florence to Siena by bus (about 1 hr, few euros)

Siena to Pisa (change in Empoli) by train (about 1 hr, few euros

Pisa to Cinque Terre (change often in La Spezia to the milk train that shuttles between each of the 5 Lands) by train (about 2 hrs - few euros)

Like Ira said Siena or 5 Terre cannot be bases from which to see the other - either stay in both or chose one or the other. 5 Terre has beaches kids may like better than the glorious medieval looks of siena perhaps.

Not even close to making the Eurail Italy Pass pay off - just buy these dirt-cheap tickets as you go along
