"Think I had a date once with one of those! El Rincon is very good and serves probably the most authentic Spanish food I have tasted outside of Spain"
After Seville (4 times) and Malaga/Mallorca (104 times) I would say that El Rincon beats the lot. Stonking atmosphere as all good Tapas cellars should, earthy feel, plasma screen with old men watching La Liga, Cruzcampo on tap and ther best Tapas ever. A real find! Could have been anywhere south of Madrid.
Stayed at the newish Hilton Beetham Tower (highest building in the city with views that go forever, posh rooms and a crap breakfast. Cloud23 bar prices at the top of the hotel are clearly aligned to attract Man Utd's midflield only. However, they have a huge pool and all in all would go back.
Manchester at 2am was a party but the weather was good.
End result has been a wasted Sunday with a bad head.

markrosy..El Rincon..glad I can say that I told you so! It really is good. What was wrong with the breakfast? Last time I stayed at the Hilton it was a buffet style thing and was OK.
Agree about Cloud 23 prices, they are literally sky high. It's much better to have your fill in one of the many bars around Deansgate rather than pay inflated prices more than once. Once is for the view.

Breakfast was just cold and tasteless but actually looked really good. Other than that the hotel was pretty good, sorry also other than the continually Ryanair style charging for everything : breakfast, internet, parking etc all extra.
El Rincon : don't know where to start - can't believe that we love Spain so much and this has been on our doorstep for so long. The Tapas bar on Deansgate is OK but El Rincon was a different planet. I think their problem is their success. You have to book and clearly they don't market as they are so busy. As a result they just haven't registered on my radar.

Shame about the breakfast. You should have complained. I take it that you mean La Tasca on Deansgate? They are a chain tapas place with branches all over the country now and also own the La Vina place just up Deansgate on the opposite side.
As tapas goes, it's quite good and their staff tend to be Spanish students, but they're not a patch on Rincon.

God ys forgot about them - that makes 4 -
El Rincon
La Tasca
" The one we went to which is part of the Great Northern St Car Park complex" (between the Hilton and the Sainsburys Local)
"The Greek/Spanish type place over the road from the Hilton on the corner of Deansgate near the Science museum" - this one was monumentally bad very greasy and a bad night, a very big group culminating with a friend of a friend (who happens to be one of the richest sub 40 year olds in town) ordering silly expensive wine all night whilst we had agreed to split the bill.
Was very suprised to see the number of empty shops on King Street (Gant still surviving thankfully)- it would appear that The Trafford Centre/recession is biting hard.

The Greekish place is Dimitris, which is usually OK. Except with friends trying to show off without regard for others.
I've never understood why more and more shops keep getting built. There's only so much £££ to go round within an area and every one that opens dilutes the income of all. On top of a slowdown, it's bad news for retailers.
BTW, I still think that San Rocco and the Teppenyaki in Chinatown take some beating.

Wow I didn't know I would know I would create such a stir....so number one MINKIE is female - number two - did get there and had a most wonderful time! I have to say that my overall impression of the British has always been grand - I hestitate to say it - but my best friends have been Brits. I had no trouble at all - in fact people were most helpful. I was never at a loss for company or a helping hand! Thank you all for your advice!
Oh and a Bakewell pudding recipe would be most appreciated !

I didn't see the ones that were deleted, so not sure what "riling" took place. However, in line with the Northern eagerness to please, here's two links for bakewell recipes.

Well, to be really controversial ;-)
I think that the BBC recipe is the better of the two.
I wouldn't use puff pastry and I think that you really need ground almonds for taste and texture.
I remember that I couldn't buy packs of ground almonds in the US, so I used a small coffee grinder.
