Getting from Rome to Amalfi?

Please help! We are arriving Rome in late March, and going directly to our hotel in Praiano, next to Positano. I'm having a terrible time figuring out the best way to get there. We want to take a train, we were told to Salerno, and then rent a car. But are the trains direct to Salerno? Or do we have to get off and reboard in Naples? If so, maybe we should rent the car instead in Naples? (I really didn't want to be driving around Naples if possible). I know we take the train from Termini - do we have to buy tickets in advance, or can we just get them that day? Anyone know how much round trip tix are Rome to Salerno? I know this is a lot of questions, I appreciate any info you all can give me. Grazie! Maria

You can take a train from Rome to Naples like we did in May of 2004. We hired a car to take us directly from Naples to Positano. I read on this site some other options: Take a ferry to Positano which might offer grat views from the sea. If you think driving in Naples is bad, wait until you get to Positano and the Amalfi Coast. We bought the train tickets online and we opted for the express. It took about 2 hrs from Rome to Naples and by car to Positano, another 45 minutes. IF I remember correctly, it cost us about 80-90 EU for the car. Have a great time.

Hi

We hired a car in Rome and drove down to Positano. Did not find it too daunting however avoid Naples if possible, it was a bit chaotic. The auto-strada's are great. The narrow cliffside roads at Amalfi are a bit scary. We stopped at Postiano for a week in March, it was brilliant. It is without doubt the best destination in the world, I would have stopped for the rest of life if I could have. Try the agri-turrismo places for dinner.

Forget driving on the Amalfi Coast, it isn't worth it. Take the Eurostar to Napoli Centrale and make arrangements with Salvatore at [email protected]
He will meet you on the platform, escort you to his Mercedes Minivan, load your luggage, drive you to your hotel, unload your luggage, be very courteous, speak good English, and otherwise make your travel as comfortable and easy as possible. He drove us from Naples to Praiano for 110 Euros for the 4 of us. Best money we ever spent.

We also took a train from Rome to Naples and then a private driver from the Naples train station to Positano. We used Francesco Marrapese - details on our trip report.

Hi M,

I also recommend against renting a car for the AC. It is very difficult to find a parking space.

There are 2 ways for you to get to Praiano.

1: Train to Salerno.

1A: The ferry docks are about 3 blks SE of the train station. Take the ferry to Amalfi. Take the SITA bus to Praiano.

1B: Take the SITA bus from the train station. You might have to change buses in Amalfi.

2: Take the train to Naples

2A: Hire a limo to take you to your hotel. about 100E

2B: Take the Circumvesuviana train from downstairs in the Naples Central station to Sorrento. Take the SITA bus to Praiano. The bus leaves from a stop directly across from the train station.

Train schedules, prices and tickets are at www.trenitalia.com. You should allow about 3hr from the time your plane is scheduled to land to the time your train leaves from Rome TE.

For Ferry schedules Positano – Amalfi - Salerno (P.zza della Concordia):
