Germany to Italy...HELP
My husband and I are going on our 3rd trip to Germany this September. We always try to see something new each trip. This year we wanted to see either Rome or Venice. We have 3 or 4 days to do this. That includes the travel time to get there and back too. We would be leaving from the Schweinfurt area. (Frankenland). My husband has never been on a train, but it seems like it would take too long; and driving seems too long also. We would probably fly then.
Any suggestions, tips of where to go, how to get there would be most appreciated. If you think we are

For possible budget flights I would check www.skyscanner.net
For Venice, I would include Milan, among others, as a destination since it is only a couple hours' train ride from Venice.

Low cost carrier Air Berlin www.airberlin.com flies from Nuremburg or Frankfurt am Main to Rome.
Low cost Ryanair www.ryanair.com flies from Frankfurt Hahn Airport to Treviso (about 20 miles from Venice). However your starting point in not terribly close to any of the three originating airports.
Milan to Venice is more like a 3 hour train trip, so I would be reluctant to use Milan as a jumping off place for Venice within your time frame.
Instead, I would think about a driving trip from Schweinfurt to Verona, a very nice historic city in the Veneto, and closer driving distance to Germany. www.viamichelin says it is a 717 kilometer trip which takes 6 1/2 hours.

Also, I forgot to add, if you stayed in Verona you could make Venice a day trip: 1 hour 20 minutes each way on an express train. It's really easier to take the train to Venice than to drive because you have to park your car some distance away and take transport in.

I have been checking kayak.com for some dates in November and Lufthansa has had some flights for around EUR 100, round-trip, incl tax, from Frankfurt to Rome or Venice. It's probably worth checking your dates and possibly from Munich as well.
