to buy or not to buy health insurance?

Hello Fodorites

A family of 4 (mom, dad and two teens), healthy, traveling to Brussels, Paris, Madrid and Barcelona from an island in the Carib is wondering if they should play it safe buying some type of health insurance for the trip. Their local health insurance does not provide emergency covergage out of their country.

I have not had an emergency during my travels plus my US health insurance will cover. Since I cannot advice them, I promised them I would ask you for your experience and advice. I would hate to see them spend money they cannot spare buying a policy if those countries would give them emergency care while traveling.

I will appreciate your help.

I guess it's a personal thing but I've always believed if you can afford to travel you can afford travel insurance.

I wouldn't dream of leaving home without it. Travel insurance also covers you for more than just health. My insurance covers against cancellations, vehicle hire excess, lost/damaged luggage, robbery etc.

Hello epaulino, have your friends go to the website: www.insuremytrip.com and review the various companies and the coverages that are offered. Of course I do not know if the policies offer insurance coverage for a family that are residents of an island in the Caribbean.

I have been taken to task for my opinion about travel insurance on this board in the past, but my advice is still the same.
Travel insurance is VERY important. Like most insurance you probably wont need to use it (hopefully), so in that sense some may see it as a waste of money. On the other hand.......if you do need it, you'll be so glad you bought cover.
I never gamble!!

If you can afford it, buy! I do not buy insurance for cancellations since my credit card covers that but I do buy health insurance. Although, my insurance will cover emergency care, I will have to spend money out of pocket, and get reimbursed later. I'd rather pay $60 for health insurance, have the insurance take care of the costs up front (www.insuremytrip.com or travelgard.com) so I can walk away without breaking the bank.

Sure, DH and I are both healthy but we're buying for our toddler (we all know how kids get sick easily), and for those situations where one sprains an ankle (I have) or develops a bad case of the flu (DH had) which can happen no matter how healthy you are, or where you are.

Thanks to all for your help. I passed along your message to the family.

I feel priviledged to be part of this board and be able to tap into all your experience.
