Can anyone speak to the carryon limits when departing from Frankfurt? My wife and I were surprised in London last November when we were told only one carryon...no exceptions. Does Germany, and more specifically Frankfurt, have similar restrictions?

Yes, different countries have different restricions. However, equally important may be that different airlines have different restrictions, and these can even vary by seating class. 'Best to check with your specific airlines.

"Germany" doesn't, today, have limits to how much you can carry onto a plane. Some airlines do, and you need to investigate them individually.

From April 17, all passengers going through security in western European airports (and that includes all passengers changing planes in Western Europe, wherever they've come from, even if they've on one of those fraudulent codeshare things that imply you're staying on one plane when you're changing airlines every five seconds) will be limited to one piece of carry on baggage, which may not exceed the current UK size limit. That one piece includes handbags: if you're carrying one, it counts as your one, unless it'll fit into another legal carryon bag.

Anything you buy after security is allowed as handbaggae. It must be sealed, and remain so during you trip, including any transfers you make. On flights from Europe to the US any booze/perfume etc you buy must be handed over before embarkation and will be returned to you on arrival in the US, unless you are booked through to another US airport in which case it is not possible to to this.
Everything else you may need on the flight MUST fit in your one piece of handluggae, or in your pockets...

If you are going to transit an EU country then DON'T buy duty free liquids like alcohol or perfume before you reach the transitting country.

Otherwise your expensive purchase will go into a bin never to be seen again.
