germany/austria itinerary advice
My husband and I are traveling to Germany and Austria in September. I've done a fair amount of research on this forum and others and need alittle more advice. We'll be traveling for two weeks flying into Munich. We plan to spend 2 nights in Munich, 3-Salzburg, 1-Hallstat, 2-Fussen,1-Rothenburg,3-St Goar, then fly out of Frankfurt. My question is whether if would be better to skip the time in the St Goar/Mosel Valley area of Germany and spend those 3-4 days going to Vienna/Danube Valley? I would plan the itinerary in that case something like: Munich-2days; 3-Vienna; 3-Salzburg; 1-Hallstat; 2-Fussen; 1-Rothenburg;back to Munich for an afternoon of Oktoberfest then home the next day.(or would you recommend skipping the afternoon/evening of Oktoberfest and just driving from Rothenburg to Frankfurt for the next day flight home?) Basically, which is more worth the time - StGoar/Mosel valley or Vienna/Danube Valley without being to much to try to do in two weeks. We'll be renting a car for all this traveling. Thanks in advance for any advice!!

No, don't miss the Rhine and Mosel River area. It's really lovely. Many small little villages worth visiting as well as castles such Burg Eltz near Cochem (Mosel) and Marksburg and Rheinfels (Rhine).

I'm with you on more time in Salzburg and less in the Rhine and Mosel areas. Between Salzburg and Fussen there are some great places to visit and you could easily use up a day on that 110 mile stretch. Bertschesgaden, Garmish, Ettal Monastery, Schlos Linderhof, Oberammergau, Wiesskirche, then Fussen.
On the way from Fussen to Rothenburg you can see the really realy tall cathedran in Ulm. Between Rothenburg and Frankfurt you can make a stop in Wurzburg. I haven't bee there but I have seen several recommendations for it here on Fodors.
