Germany and Switzerland

My mom and I will be in Germany and Switzerland in June and July. Here is the itinerary I have created, and am wondering if I have planned it good or if I should change anything. Any help is appreciated. We have a free Marriott hotel and have to use it for 7 consecutive days. We are arriving in Munich on June 25, 2007 and leaving Zürich on July 6, 2007

June 24, 2007

Chicago to Munich

June 25, 2007

arrive in Munich at 8:10 in the morning and take a train to Füssen. Spend the night at Villa Jägerhaus in Schwangau.

June 26, 2007

tour of Neuschwanstein/ Hohenschwangau and bus to Oberammergau. visit Oberammergau for a few hours and take the train back to Munich.

June 27, 2007

June 28, 2007

train Munich to Garmisch Partenkirchen. In morning see Linderhof and in afternoon see Garmisch Partenkirchen or go up Zugspitze before returning to Munich

June 29, 2007

June 30, 2007

July 1, 2007

July 2, 2007

day in Munich

July 3, 2007

early train from Munich to Zürich. Does it make sense to stop in Liechtenstein on the way. My mom has always wanted to go there. I just don't want it to take up a lot of time if it is not worth it. afternoon sight see in Zürich.

July 4, 2007

train to Luzern. go up to the top of Mount Pilatus. spend afternoon in Luzern. return to Zürich

July 5, 2007

train from Zürich to Montreux. See Chateau de Chillon. walk along Lake Geneva. train back to Zürich

July 6, 2007

fly out of Zürich with a connection in Frankfort.

we are leaving Zürich at 7:00 and arriving in Frankfurt at 8:15. The plane leaves Frankfurt at 12:45. Is there anything near the airport to see or should we just stay at the airport?

I have been trying to figure out what the best and cheapest rail pass for us and would appreciate any help. It would be for 1 adult and a 19 year old.

How expensive would a taxi be from Garmisch Partenkirchen to Linderhof. The bus seems a lot longer than it would in a car, and with the hope of going up Zugspitze in the afternoon, the bus seems to take a lot longer time. I am hoping at least to take a taxi one way to save time if it will not cost too much.

Any suggestions or ideas to make this trip better and more enjoyable would be appreciated.

Brett

Hi brett17,

Just a note for your plans of 5 July -- the train trip from Zurich to Montreux is more than three hours, so you'll be spending 6-7 hours on the train on that one day. I think so many interior hours will ruin your memories of the day! There are so many things to do in/around Zurich that it would be a shame to waste one like that. There is a castle in the delightful town of Rapperswil just down the lake, or you could easily get to Thun (1h25) on Lake Thun to see the stunning scenery and its castle.

Good luck!

Great plan. I got off there a while and stayed in Salzburg but then got back with it. Love the ice caves and the salt mines and berchestgarden and and everything else.

Zurich to Montreux- on the most direct route, you can get there in less than 3 hours. You'd have to change trains in Lausanne. Second class, one way ticket is currently 70CHF.
If you'd like to check other train schedules/prices in Switzerland, check www.sbb.ch. There is a link for English.

Since you are cutting clear across Switzerland though, I would suggest breaking up the days some. Maybe go to Montreux early morning on the 4th or swap the Luzern day? The Montreux Jazz festival is set to begin on July 6th (not sure if you like jazz), but the city with definitely be lively at that time.

The weather here in Luzern last July, was VERY hot, so make sure to bring sunblock.

The taxi from Garmisch to Linderhof can cost around 50 Euros. Think about renting a car for the day. Landscape is gorgeous there, it will be fun driving around and seeing some lakes, mountains etc.

Have I understood you will arrive in Frankfurt at 8:15 p.m. and your flight will depart the next day at noon? Then you will have no time to see something. You should be at the airport around 9:00 or 9:30.

Villa Jägerhof is an excellent selection for Hohenschwangau!
