The difference between East and West is so minuscule now that it doesn't matter.

With three days you don't have time to visit other places. Berlin takes up a lot of time.

hotel castel on the Kudam in West Berlin is economical and clean. Have a great time.

Just returned from six nights in Berlin. It is a huge, huge city, but you can get anywhere quickly on the S Bahn or U Bahn. The new train station is actually a huge mall with tracks running through it. We stayed at the Marriot at Potsdamer Platz because we had Marriot points, and it was great, but I agree that www.hotel.de or kayak.com would be most helpful.

Berlin is an awesome city to just walk around in, but there is so much history there that I would suggest going on a few short tours. We took tours with Original Berlin Walks because they fit best into our schedule. We didn't have more than ten people on any tour (six on most), and the tour guides were well-spoken and knowledgeable.

We started out with the Discover Berlin tour which gave us a good overview of the main parts of the city. We also did Sachsenhausen and Potsdam which were both fabulous. I am now reading a biography of Frederick the Great, being inspired by what I learned about him on our Potsdam tour.

We also did the Jewish Life in Berlin tour. We learned some behind the scenes history about a few places we had walked by several times. Be sure to notice the stumbling blocks throughout the city!

I know there are other companies who provide the same type of tours.

This would be way too long if I told you every thing we did and saw, but you'll love the city and its people!

I prefer staying in the Postdamerplatz or in the renovated Mitte (East Berlin) especially for first time visitors. Potsdamerplatz is futuristic modern like La Defense in Paris but much warmer architecture and with a super central location because it is right between east & west. My favorites are Grand Hyatt, Mandala & Marriott in Potsdamerplatz. In the Mitte: Sofitel & Melia, there are also other well located hotels which I like less: Hilton, Maritim, & Westin. The top 5 stars: Hotel de Rome & Hotel Adlon.
West Berlin was the american sector that is mostly unrestored so most of the buildings have the boring 1960/1970's look. Have a great time in Berlin!

Check out the Melia Berlin. Reviews on tripadvisor.com can be very helpful and we got this hotel for 80E night, a bargain.

Priceline is also a good choice for Berlin.
