Gasthof Fraundorfer

This Gasthof in Garmisch/Partenkirchen is the BEST.We spent 2 nights there early Oct. Great accommodations, fabulous food and Barbara is the consummate hostess. Never pass up a chance to stay there-highlight of our trip!!

We also stayed there, but would you believe it was 1961. Barbara could carry 8 beers then--I wonder now.

Bob - I am surprised you were old enough to drink back in 61!

Oh yes, I was in the USAF and married. But, I must admit I had a senior moment. Yes, we were in Garmisch in 1961, and yes we did stay at the Gasthof--just not in 1961. It was really 1984. It was late May and we had the loft room in the main house. Susan was 5 months pregnant, and we awoke from our goose filled bedding to a blanket of snow in the village. Barbara was about 40 then, and that was 20 years ago. The first trip to Garmisch in 1961 we stayed at the nice Hotel von Steuben for $3 per nite--thanks to the military discount. Hmmm !
Memories do last.

Stayed there in late Sept '02.
Their mini O'Fest was way better than the madhouse in Munchen.
They just got a great write up in Sunday's DMN Travel section.

Bob: We found Garmisch in 1970 when in the Army in Germany. Once you find this area you get back as much as possible. We have been touching back there for the last 34 years. Our first trip we stayed at the Army hotel on Eibsee Lake....$7.00 per night. Now the hotel is private again but the Eibsee still beautiful.

I am interested in staying at the Fraundorfer in Feb. I stopped there a couple of years ago in May and unfortunately they were closed for a few weeks. I went to their website and asked for prices but haven't received any yet. Can someone give me an idea what a room costs? Thanks!

Our Internet rate for 2 days was 172 euros for 2 people. However, we did not like the small,3rd floor room very much so asked for other options. We got a 2 bdrm, both with TV,small kitchen(one-burner stove(not used) and refrig for 20 euros a night more.Well worth it!! Great Gasthof-recommend it highly.

Thanks, but that's a lot higher than I expected. I'll stick to my Garmisch standby - Bichlerhof, behind the town swimming pool, for a very nice room and breakfast at 44 euros for two people.

Ahh the Frauendorfer!!

Hey Bob, I first discovered Garmish/Frauendorfer in 1985! Had a crazy group of ski bums friends out of Breezy Point NY (Homeland of NYC Police and Fireman!)

One of the group was in the Army and based in Garmish We decended 100 strong and "invaded" the area!

What wonderful memories! I have it all on video tape , the old way with a large camera and a separate backpack size battery!!

Fraundorfer night was one of the fondest memories of that week! Been back many times since!

We stayed at the Fraundorfer about 10 years ago- a final trip before we embarked on parenthood. We went back this summer with our sons 7 and 9. It was exactly as we remembered. Barbara and the staff could not have been more accomodating to us.

We'll be taking our grown up children to Garmisch for the week following Christmas. We have reservations at the Fraundorfer for New Year's Eve. Can't wait. They reserved for us at 7:30 and I inquired about maybe getting the second seating so we could be there at midnight. They assured me that we'd still be there and still eating at midnight. Should be fun.

irish,
It was a syndicated piece. I cannot find it either, but it replicated my fun experience. The writer was European, perhaps Swedish?

We were in Germany for two weeks this spring, and I must say, our best 2 nights were at Gasthof Fraundorfer. Barbara is a most delightful hostess. You must try their "Beer Liquor" (English spelling). My husband's family immigrated to the US from Germany in the late 20's and he grew up speaking both German and English. Barbara was delighted to speak a combination of English and German with Harv, while I was happy to drink more "Beer Liquor"!
