Garmisch - Day trips by train?
I'm looking for some suggestions for easy day trips via train from Garmisch. I have been to all of Ludwig's castles and Innsbruck and although I would return, I'm interested in doing something new.
Thanks

Top routes from Murnau
Arrival station Duration Service Trains per day
München Hbf 48m 4:47 - 23:32 26
München Flughafen Terminal 1h 41m 4:47 - 23:32 26
München-Pasing 41m 4:47 - 23:32 26
Oberammergau 38m 5:12 - 23:34 20
Garmisch-Partenkirchen 23m 0:28 - 23:28 26
Innsbruck Hbf 1h 48m 6:05 - 23:32 19
Murnau has a great brewery and food hall. But you can change trains there and go to Oberammergau.

Mittenwald?
Check out the Bavaria Pass where you and others can ride all day on local trains throughout Bavaria for about 30 euros total for all.
Sold locally at stations- no need to pre-book -no reservations even available on regional trains. Also valid on buses. www.bahn.de/en for fares and schedules.

Hi wanderfrau,
Agree with the trip to Murnau -- it's an overlooked town with a sweet little pedestrian core.
Also agree with Oberammergau, pretty touristy place, but very pretty with lots of flowers and beautiful buildings.
Would also recommend Augsburg, which I think is prettier and more interesting than Munich. It has a series of canals and tangled streets at its low end, once you pass through the old town.
Have you been to Mittenwald? Many consider it to be the perfect Bavarian village, smaller than Garmisch. It's nestled below the Karwendel mountain range. My favorite walk in the area is from Kruen to Mittenwald, about 2h. There's also a fabulous violin-making museum in town that gives lots of information about how one man brought a skill to his family and developed a trade, then a cottage industry that influenced the entire region.
Have you been to the Eibsee? Take the Eibsee bus from Garmisch there, then walk around the lake (1h30).
Even though you've been to the castles, have you spent any time in Fuessen? Thats one of my favorite little towns in the area; I've been there three times and haven't ever been to the castle. There is a large lake just outside of the town.
Hope some of this is helpful, and have fun as you plan!

Hi again,
Yes, they are. They are both flat and asphalt. I've done the one from Kruen to Mittenwald often in the wintertime, and the snow was packed down and easy to walk on. I did the walk around the Eibsee just last November just after a storm, and it was fine. There were a few patches of ice on the trail, but nothing that would stop you. Both of these walks are very popular and very well populated -- you won't be alone!
You should have some water-proof shoes with good lug soles though.
Have fun!
