Gare de Lyon neighborhood

Spending 5 days in Paris in July and looking for reasonable accommodations in good neighbor. Looking at the Hilton near Gare de Lyon. Anyone know anything about the neighborhood for two “mature” ladies?

The only Hilton I see near Gare de Lyon is Hotel Camiile, Tapestry collection by Hilton. Is that the one? It's a fine location. About a 5 minute walk to the metro entrance on Blvd Diderot.

Of note, I see that Le Quincy is still operating nearby. I am shocked. It's a very old-fashioned restaurant that I haven't been to in ages. The kind of place where, if you order a terrine, they will bring a very large one to your table, meant for sharing. It will stay on your table until someone else orders it, then it will be whisked off to another table.

We were quite happy (stayed 3X) at a hotel on Ave. Ledru Rollins (now under a different name)
Be sure to eat at La Biche au Bois restaurant; recommended to us by a visiting diplomat who dined frequently there.
Offers game as well as "regular" food.

Not walkable to any sights, far too south. Move up to the 5th arr. or 9th. Much less pricey than 6th or 7th. Get portable guidebook to study and take along. Staying near train stations is never best parts of town, esp true for Gare du Nord, or Montparnasse.

I've stayed in Montparnasse, though near Edgar Quinet. It's a wonderful Breton neighborhood and convenient since there are at least three metro lines nearby to take you to many top destinations without transferring.

That neighborhood where Hilton is looks nice but not a great location.

For budget hotels, I second the Montparnasse neighborhood. It is so underrated but has gotten more expensive since last time I was there. I stayed near the Vavin station and it was wonderful. You have access to a couple other metro stations nearby. The middle of Paris is 10 minutes by metro or 25 min walk.

You can walk to Lux garden in a few minutes and the neighborhood is so vibrant with plenty of eateries. 6th is the best neighborhood but it is pricy.

But why would anyone want to go everywhere and anywhere only by Metro? For budget choices check out:

Hotel des Grandes Ecoles 5th arr; Hotel Chopin in Passage Jouffroy 9th arr; Hotel des Grands Hommes 5th and Hotel Opera d'Antin 2d arr. We stayed at last one couple nts on 'back end' of our Xmas trip, and it is right behind Galeries-Lafayette, with couple blocks walk south to Opera, Madeleine, Place de la Concord. Recently renovated, and help couldnt have been nicer, breakfast incl. All the above are walkable to top sights. Montparnasse is along back end of Lux Gardens, again a significant walk down to main sights. Get guidebook to see where these are, versus what you wish to see.

All of these other locations/hotels people are suggesting are great - not trying to pooh pooh that - BUT I actually really love the area around Gare de Lyon! And the street the Hilton is on is lovely. Lots of shops, restaurants, etc, and you really aren't THAT far from the main sites - less than a 20 min walk to Isle St Louis - and it's very close to some hidden gems: the hip Canal Saint-Martin neighborhood, the entrance to the Coulee-Verte (old railway converted into just lovely walking paths and gardens with beautiful views of the city), and you can walk across the bridge and be in the Jardins des Plantes, one of Paris's most underrated and gorgeous gardens. I wouldn't necessarily discourage the OP from staying there and - even tho I typically prefer smaller boutiques - I have thought about staying in the area myself because of these reasons.

Thanks for all the replies and good advice. I am looking for something not too expensive in the Hilton or Marriott lines to use points for at least part of he cost. But most important is a safe neighborhood.

I have stayed in neighborhoods away from the city center and used the Metro but my late husband had made the arrangements and I cant remember where we stayed before.

still looking and pondering 😆

I cant think of many places in Paris where you wouldn't feel safe. Maybe the northern parts along boulevard des Maréchaux like Porte de la Chapelle.
it is true that the immediate surroundings of the main train stations are often quite dirty with shaby people hanging around. Their metro stations can also bit intimidating, difficult to navigate, dozens of exits, long corridors and Gare de Lyon metro station is maybe one of the worst for that.
So if you can check if there is smaller metro station near your hotel, you will be 100% safe and comfortable

You don't need to navigate the Gare de Lyon to access the Metro station. It's a short, easy walk from the hotel. You are safe in Paris.
