Garbage in Naples!

Wow, on the front page of World news in the Detroit Free Press is a picture of the streets of Naples, piled with garbage. Seems the garbagemen have been striking and the piles are stacking up. It shows a burned up lounger (from what I could see) laying in the middle of the road. Thank God it wasn't a scratch and sniff. I can't even begin to imagine what it smells like there.

Having lived with post-hurricane garbage for a only a few days at a time, I can only imagine how disgusting it is there.

Hope the garbage men get what they want and get back to work real soon!

Not clear this is a strike, or not only a strike. Locals are protesting plans to reopen a dump site - see tinyurl.com/332jfp

I should go to Naples on next Friday but I was able to cancel my task.
I am afraid that what it is happening in Naples is the begin of the end for that area, oh my God !
No strike, absolutely, but, because of years and years of missing responsability, no place where stock and burn daily tons of garbage.
It is ashaming !

The AP News story says the protests and clashes with Police are centered in the Pianura area. But the clouds of smoke made by burning the uncollected garbage heaps by (rightfully) angry local citizens must be affecting the whole city

Thes story says there has been no collection of garbage for the past 2 weeks-no room in the dumps.

Vincenzo, the poor people of Napoli!
This is a terrible time!

Just heard from a friend who left Naples last week. He said it stunk to the high heavens. It was gross and disgusting. He thinks this may really hurt the tourism of Naples.

CBC had some video footage and details

seems a lot of Italian garbage ends up in Campania dumps and a lot of it also ends up in rivers and along roads as the Mafia here has control of much of it and illegally dumps a bit about the countryside

But it points to two big dumpsites being closed for some reason so that not just Naples but much of Campania has no place to take the garbage

It's worst in naples where footage showed garbage virtually everywhere with no hope in sight to resolve it

Could not convey smells but looked like it was a stinking hellhole

I hope the army helps. My daughter is on a 3 week trip to Italy for a college course and is supposed to visit Naples for 1 day this week. I really wanted her to see it since my wife and I lived there and got married in a Naples palace 22 years ago. We were used to some garbage, especially during strikes, but nothin like this.

Wow. I finally saw pictures of this on last night's news. It is still going on. The streets are lined with mountains of garbage. I've never seen anything like it. Horrible.

But they are apparently tackling the problem and finally starting to move the garbage out

barge full landed in sardinia and gov't is appealing to other localities in Italy to start accepting Neopolitan garbage

Sardinia and Sicily are only dummy temporary solutions.
There is a lot of garbage still now in Naples, my God.
