nearly got the whole trip planned now,so excited!!!
we have decided to travel from salzburg to munich by train, (tickets booked!!) then we will be staying in munich for 3 nights at Hotel Uhland, ( recomended by you guys!) we will then be heading to fussen for 2 nights, does anybody know of and hotels there that are central in location and of 3* or above. looking for traditional feel, should add that we will be traviling by car to fussen.

check out Hotel Sonne. I assume it's 3 stars...but have heard nothing but rave reviews and we've booked a stay there next month.

The Luitpoldparc is directly across the street from the train station; stayed there one night in August. Nice enough but not A/C and it was hot and humid which made me wish I had stayed elsewhere.

We're staying at ALTSTADT GITEK "ZUM HECHTEN" in May www.hotel-hechten.com

They have a reputation of having a nice hotel, 88 Euros, with balcony facing the castles. Hope this helps

Ladylever, you won't need two nights in Fussen. One night will do it then you might move on to Oberammergau, Garmish or Mittenwald.

We are also staying at Zum Hechten for our upcoming visit in May.

With 2-3 days in Fuessen you can visit the castles and then motor out to Linderhof, Oberammergau and Wies; and/or visit Garmisch and Mittenwald.

You will need an Austrian Road Tax sticker for main roads in Austria.

You should also have an International Driver's Permit for Austria.

I think 2 nights in Fussen is good. We stayed twice at Hotel zum Hechten ('01 and '03) and highly recommend it. Free parking in the lot behind the hotel, freindly staff, great buffet breakfast, good and reasonable restaurant, walk out the front door and your in the pedestrian zone. Just to make a previous statement clearer, the balconies face Fussen Castle, not Ludwig's. We loved it.

Sounds like fun LL! Spent a week in Fussen at Suzanne's B&B. Very authentic feel and Suzanne is great, she lives there with her husband (daughter might be at college now), and makes a great breakfast. Very nice place with great view of Alps from you bedroom deck upstairs.

is good right down town. Nice rooms good breakfast free parking.

LL, since ira hasn't responded yet...

Before you cross into Austria you will see signs on the Autobahn about the "Vignette". This is the Austrian road tax sticker. There is a place right off the Autobahn where you can purchase them, just follow the signs - or lots of gas stations near the border also sell them. It costs about 8 Euro for a 10-day sticker. You just put it on your windshield (lower corner on the driver's side) and you are all set.
