Since you're looking for the funicular you're probably trying to avoid lots of stairs. Abbesses is deep and has lots of stairs but I believe there's also an elevator. If you don't take Abbesses to the funicular try to take Abbesses from Montmartre to see the artwork in the stairwell.

We stayed in Montmartre area and always took Anvers to the downtown area and came back to Abbesses. Nice area to stroll around with lots of shops, cafes, and restaurants.
On your way back from Sacre Couer, I would recommend walking back on Ave des Abbesses, turn left on Rue Lepic, and walk down to the Moulin Rouge to take a couple of pictures, then hop on the metro at Place Blanche (which is right across the street from the Moulin Rouge). Lot of fun, lot of shops & markets, and a fun stroll.

There are indeed a lot of stairs at Abbesses, but there are two large elevators, as I recall. At any rate, one of them was always working when we were there, and they could accomodate a lot of people at once, though it seemed to me that only a few of us took the elevator. Most people took the stairs.

To say the walk from Anvers is straight "uphill," is a little misleading. It's not straight uphill as the uphill from the Funicular to Sacre Couer. It's a nice and entertaining walk thru the tourist shops and cafes.
