Funicular to Sacre Coeur

Take the funicular - the hills and steps are very steep. You will have wonderful views once you get to the top and can always walk down. Get a Paris street map before you look for the funicular stop - the signs pointing the way are sometimes hard to spot. And be sure to take the elevator to the surface when you get off the metro at Abbesses. We walked past it because we had been climbing the steps at metro stops all week and couldn't see standing in line for the elevator. But it is a long, long climb to the surface at that stop, so wait for the elevator.

Thanks for all your replies! I would prefer to walk back down as I have asthma and wouldn't enjoy the top too much if I walked up.

Katie, thanks for the specifics. I think a have a map for just about everything in Paris..amazing how many different types there are! I'll watch for the elevator!

Kay, Thanks! I'm leaving 9/13.. My recollection is that as we walked toward Sacre Coeur from the metro stop, the funicular was to the left of the steps. It was about a block past the guy with the monkey and the music grinder thingee (whatever that's called) and across the street from the really bad t-shirt shop.

Sorry, most of you have quoted an incorrect metro for the funicular. It is above the M: Anvers stop. Exit the metro at Anvers, walk up rue de Steinkerque past all the fabric and souvenir shops. At the top of that you can see Sacre-Coeur and all its stairways. Turn left, walking past the carrousel, and look for the funicular just past that, going up the hill to the left of the basilique. Once at the top, turn right to go to the basilique, or turn veer left to look for Place du Tertre.

I usually go up Steinkerque unless I'm going towards it from Montmartre neighborhoods to the west of it. It is a little steep around there. I would suggest the best solution if walking up hills is a problem is to take the public Montmartrobus which you can pick up at metro Pigalle, Jules Joffrin or Abbesses and it goes all around Montmartre, including to Sacre Coeur. I think it is the only bus allowed to go up there any more. If you have a transportation pass, you can probably get on and off it several times, if you wish.

Here is the link to its bus route
http://www.ratp.fr/ParisVisite/Eng/P...tmartrobus.htm

Before you go up to Sacre Coure, just past the entrance to the funicular is a wonderful pastery shop - Le Gastelier. My wife and I have been visiting this Salon de The Patisserie for over 25 years. When we are in Paris, even if we do not go up to Sacre Coure, we make it a point to visit and have a Napoleon.
Harry

Hi Sue: If you use the funicular, be aware of pickpockets. This is a prime site. A two person team will work the lower exit turnstile. One will slip in front of you and hesitate at the turnstile as if he/she forgot something. The one in back of you will bump up against you and have a hand in your pocket or purse before you know it. Believe me, it happened to me a few years ago. Be Alert!!!
Good luck, Chet
