Edinburgh is the best -- Hogmanay (Scottish New Years) is a national holiday that goes on for a minimum of 3 days. Go "footing", drink and dance around the clock. They really know how to ring in the New Year!

Second the Edinburgh suggestion. It has its own web site, previously referred to on here. Try searching "Hogmanay".

And I would suggest you put your "first" foot forward, not just any old foot.

Vienna is a blast. There's an all night street fair in the middle of town with the opera simulcast into the street. If you really want to go nuts, there's the Kaiserball in the Hapsburg Palace. Just a great town for new year's eve!

Berlin is fun for New Years but the best time I've had was in London a couple years ago - it was cold but it was a blast!

Berlin should be fine! Though I have not been there over NYE, I agree with most travel magazines that it is one of the most vibrant and "alive" cities in Europe and should perform well on NYE.

Berlin is beautiful in winter but boy is it cold! I will tell you HONESTLY, without a fur coat you will suffer. And boots. And a fur hat and gloves and a scarf and probably a bottle of schnapps in your pocket. I am not pro-fur for fashion, this is survival mode fur, trust me. London is fun in Trafalgar Square but very jammed and the days are short and cold and dark! If you do London, book TODAY hotels, restaurants, etc. or you might be shut out. I think Berlin in winter is super, a mini-Dr. Zhivago fantasy...very frozen...lots of sun...so many nice new hotels...and lots of way out there people...
