I am flying standby and would like to get to Italy. If I can't make it direct which is the closest city that I can take a train from? How long is it from Munich or Zurich? Any other suggestions would be great.

What airline and what airport? We flew Delta from SFO through ATL to Rome and had no problems. Also try through Milan or Paris.

There is another possibility. London is generally pretty easy to get to. After spending a day or so in London you could fly EasyJet or RyanAir to Italy (same day connections to these airlines could prove difficult). This option would be faster and cheaper than a train from Germany or Austria, although you might think the trip through the Alps is worth the extra time.
